Key Points
- Amazon AI executive Peter DeSantis believes the first commercially useful small-scale quantum computers could emerge within the next five to seven years.
- Quantum computers are expected to solve specialized problems in areas such as chemistry and materials science that remain difficult for classical computers.
- Amazon is competing with major technology companies including Microsoft, Google, IBM, and Nvidia-backed startups in the race to develop practical quantum computing.
Amazon Sees Quantum Computing Approaching Commercial Reality
Amazon is becoming increasingly optimistic about the future of quantum computing, with one of its top executives forecasting that commercially useful quantum systems could arrive sooner than many industry observers expect.
Peter DeSantis, who oversees Amazon’s artificial intelligence models, custom chips, and quantum computing initiatives, said the first commercially useful small-scale quantum computers could be available within the next five to seven years.
The prediction marks one of Amazon’s clearest public timelines for when quantum technology may begin generating real-world commercial value.
Quantum Computing’s Next Major Milestone
According to DeSantis, the industry is approaching a critical turning point where quantum machines move beyond research environments and begin solving practical business and scientific problems.
He compared the expected development path to the historical growth of semiconductor technology under Moore’s Law, where computing power expanded rapidly as chip technology improved.
DeSantis believes quantum systems will initially be relatively small but will steadily increase in capability, allowing them to tackle increasingly complex challenges over time.
Not Faster Computers—Different Computers
DeSantis emphasized that quantum computers should not be viewed simply as faster versions of today’s machines.
Instead, quantum systems are designed to solve specific categories of problems that traditional computers struggle to address efficiently.
Unlike classical computers that use bits represented as either zeros or ones, quantum computers use qubits, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously. This enables entirely different approaches to computation for certain complex tasks.
Chemistry and Materials Science Among Early Applications
Amazon expects some of the earliest practical uses for quantum computing to emerge in fields that require highly complex simulations.
DeSantis highlighted chemistry and materials science as areas where quantum computers could deliver significant breakthroughs by modeling molecular interactions with far greater accuracy than existing systems.
These capabilities could accelerate discoveries in pharmaceuticals, advanced materials, energy storage, and industrial manufacturing.
Amazon’s Growing Quantum Ambitions
Amazon has steadily increased its investment in quantum technologies.
Last year, the company introduced Ocelot, a quantum computing chip designed to address error correction challenges, one of the most significant barriers to building reliable quantum systems.
Error correction remains a major hurdle because quantum information is highly sensitive to environmental interference, making it difficult to maintain stable calculations.
Competition Intensifies Across the Industry
The race to develop practical quantum computing technology has become increasingly competitive.
Major technology companies including Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and IBM are investing heavily in the sector, alongside numerous startups.
Industry forecasts vary widely. Google executives have previously suggested practical quantum applications could arrive within five years, while Microsoft has targeted commercially viable systems by 2029. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang previously estimated useful quantum computers could be more than a decade away, although he later softened that view.
Outlook
While significant technical challenges remain, Amazon’s latest forecast suggests confidence is growing that quantum computing is moving closer to commercial deployment.
If the technology develops as expected, the next decade could see quantum computers begin addressing scientific and industrial problems that remain beyond the reach of even the most powerful classical computing systems today.
