Key Points
- Quarterly Results Beat Estimates: Apple reported fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $114.48 billion and earnings of $2.10 per share, exceeding analyst expectations of $113.39 billion and $1.99, respectively.
- Gross Margin Expected to Decline: The company forecast a gross margin of 45% to 46% for the quarter ending in December, compared with 47.9% in the latest quarter, as memory chip costs continue to rise.
- iPhone Demand Remains Strong: iPhone revenue reached $57.58 billion, above estimates, supported by early demand for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and higher prices. However, supply constraints continue to limit availability of the new iPhone Duo.
Strong Quarterly Results Contrast With Cautious Outlook
Apple exceeded analyst expectations for its fiscal fourth quarter, but its outlook for the holiday period raised concerns about rising component costs and profitability.
Revenue reached $114.48 billion, compared with the $113.39 billion estimate compiled by LSEG. Earnings came in at $2.10 per share, above the expected $1.99, even excluding five cents from tariff refunds.
Gross margin also exceeded expectations, reaching 47.9% against an estimated 47.5%.
Despite the stronger results, investors reacted to management’s more cautious guidance. Apple shares initially declined approximately 4% during the conference call before recovering part of the losses, eventually trading around 2% lower.
The company expects gross margin to fall to between 45% and 46% in the quarter ending in December, reflecting continued pressure from memory chip prices.
Rising Memory Costs Challenge Profitability
Apple warned that memory costs increased compared with the June quarter and are expected to continue rising into next year.
The pressure reflects broader demand for memory components as AI infrastructure investment drives suppliers toward higher-bandwidth memory production. Higher component costs are creating challenges for manufacturers across the technology industry.
Apple has taken steps to secure supplies, although management did not directly confirm whether the company had entered into a long-term supply agreement.
Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan said Apple is working closely with memory suppliers and increased its purchasing commitments by $33 billion during the quarter.
CEO John Ternus also explained that higher memory costs were partially offset by inventory carried into the quarter and lower costs for certain non-memory components.
Apple has additionally adjusted product pricing. Alongside the iPhone 18 Pro launch, the company increased iPhone 17 prices by $100 and raised prices on some MacBook models, helping offset higher component expenses.
iPhone Sales Strengthen, but Duo Supply Remains Constrained
iPhone revenue reached $57.58 billion, exceeding the $56.54 billion analyst estimate. The results included sales from the iPhone 18 Pro models but excluded the iPhone Duo.
The new iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable smartphone, has generated strong initial demand. The device sold out online within hours and attracted customers to retail stores.
However, supply remains constrained. Ternus said Apple is currently unable to meet demand and cannot predict when supply and demand will reach balance.
He also addressed reports of cracked displays, describing returns related to screen issues as involving a very small percentage of units. Apple is replacing affected devices.
The combination of strong demand and manufacturing constraints makes production capacity an important factor in the company’s near-term product performance.
Product Strategy and Services Revenue
Apple is also changing its product release strategy under CEO John Ternus, who took over in September. Rather than launching most new iPhone models during the autumn period, the company is spacing out releases, with the Pro and Duo models shipping this year and other models expected next year.
The company also introduced new non-iPhone products, including its first touchscreen laptops and first smart-home hub. The broader release schedule is intended to make revenue less dependent on the traditional holiday-quarter sales surge.
Services revenue reached $31.57 billion, broadly in line with the $31.58 billion estimate. However, Apple forecast services growth of 8% to 9% for the holiday quarter, below analyst expectations of 10.7%.
Management also identified AI-related costs as a factor affecting margins. Apple’s Siri AI features rely partly on Google’s cloud infrastructure, while the company plans to increase some iCloud+ subscription prices to help offset AI expenses. Specific pricing details have not yet been announced.
Ternus said certain features relying on server-side models, including Siri AI and intelligent photo editing, will have usage limits.
Regional and Product Revenue Performance
Apple’s results were mixed across its other business segments.
Mac revenue reached $10.79 billion, exceeding the $9.61 billion analyst estimate. iPad revenue was $6.23 billion, while wearables generated $8.30 billion, with both categories falling below expectations.
Revenue in China reached $17.54 billion, below the $18.58 billion estimate compiled by Visible Alpha.
These results highlight differences in demand across Apple’s product categories and geographic markets as the company navigates rising component costs and a changing product launch schedule.
What Investors Should Watch Next
Apple’s ability to protect gross margins during the holiday quarter will be a central focus. The projected decline to 45%–46% places greater importance on pricing decisions, supplier commitments and inventory management.
Investors will also monitor whether Apple can increase iPhone Duo production sufficiently to meet demand, while addressing reported display issues. The company’s services growth outlook and plans to manage AI-related operating costs will provide further insight into the profitability of its expanding technology ecosystem.
Although the latest quarterly results exceeded expectations, the next phase will test Apple’s ability to sustain revenue momentum while managing higher memory costs and significant product development commitments.
