Key Points
- Salesforce plans to acquire Rune Technologies, an AI-powered defense technology company, to expand its Missionforce business serving the U.S. military and government agencies.
- Rune's software helps military personnel forecast supply needs, allocate resources and plan logistics, including in environments with limited or no network connectivity.
- Salesforce's defense business is growing rapidly, while the acquisition continues a broader AI-focused expansion strategy amid concerns that AI adoption could pressure demand for traditional software.
Salesforce is expanding deeper into the defense technology market with an agreement to acquire Rune Technologies, adding AI-powered military logistics capabilities to its Missionforce business. The transaction reflects a broader strategy by the enterprise software company to expand its artificial intelligence portfolio while developing new sources of demand beyond traditional commercial software.
Rune Adds AI-Powered Military Logistics Capabilities
Rune Technologies develops AI-powered software designed to help military personnel forecast supply requirements, plan resource allocation and determine where equipment and other resources should be deployed. Its technology can also operate in environments with limited or no network connectivity, an important capability for military operations where communications infrastructure may be unavailable or disrupted.
Salesforce said the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps already use Rune’s technology. Financial terms of the proposed acquisition were not immediately disclosed, while the transaction is expected to close during the fourth quarter of Salesforce’s fiscal 2027, subject to the applicable conditions.
Missionforce Emerges as a Fast-Growing Defense Business
The acquisition comes roughly one year after Salesforce launched Missionforce, its business focused on serving the U.S. military and government agencies. Salesforce said the division was growing 80% year over year, with customers across all six branches of the U.S. military.
That growth gives Salesforce a potentially important avenue for expanding its customer base at a time when government agencies are increasing their focus on digital capabilities and AI-supported operations. Rune’s specialized technology could strengthen Missionforce by adding capabilities directly linked to logistics, resource planning and operational decision-making.
Salesforce Accelerates Its AI Acquisition Strategy
The Rune transaction is part of a broader acquisition campaign as Salesforce seeks to expand its AI capabilities. Investors have increasingly questioned whether rapid adoption of artificial intelligence could eventually reduce demand for some traditional enterprise software products, creating pressure on established software providers to demonstrate new areas of growth.
Salesforce agreed last week to acquire AI marketing software company Braze for approximately $5.66 billion. Earlier this year, it signed a $3.6 billion agreement for AI agent platform Fin, while its acquisition of Informatica last year was valued at $8 billion. The sequence of transactions demonstrates the scale of Salesforce’s effort to reposition its portfolio around AI-enabled products and services.
Defense Technology Broadens Salesforce’s Growth Strategy
Rune offers Salesforce exposure to a specialized segment of the AI market where software is increasingly connected to mission-critical government operations. The acquisition also illustrates how enterprise technology providers are pursuing vertical-specific AI capabilities rather than relying exclusively on general-purpose business software.
Going forward, investors will be watching whether Salesforce can convert its expanding AI portfolio into sustained revenue growth while integrating multiple acquisitions. The performance of Missionforce, the contribution from Rune and the company’s ability to maintain its 80% year-over-year defense growth will be important indicators of whether the strategy can establish defense and AI as durable growth engines beyond Salesforce’s traditional software franchise.
