Asian Markets Deliver a Mixed Performance

Asian markets recorded a mixed performance on October 29, 2026, as gains in Japan, India and Australia contrasted with declines in South Korea, mainland China and Hong Kong. The Nikkei 225 led the major equity benchmarks higher, while the KOSPI recorded the steepest decline among the listed regional indices.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 climbed 1.10% to 64,659.47, gaining 705.28 points from its previous reported close of 63,954.19. India’s S&P BSE SENSEX advanced 1.00% to 73,980.75, adding 696.27 points from its previous reported level of 73,284.48.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 increased 0.50% to 8,891.80, moving closer to the 8,900 threshold. The advances in these three markets contrasted with renewed weakness across other major Asian benchmarks.

Japan and India Lead Equity Gains

The Nikkei’s 1.10% advance extended its recovery following gains in the previous reported sessions. The index approached 64,700, although it remained below the 65,000 level.

India’s SENSEX also recorded a solid increase, recovering from its 0.43% decline in the previous reported session. Its 1.00% gain brought the benchmark closer to 74,000.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 added 44.50 points to reach 8,891.80. The index’s 0.50% increase represented a more moderate advance than those recorded in Japan and India, but it reinforced the positive performance among selected regional markets.

South Korea, China and Hong Kong Retreat

South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index fell 1.24% to 5,937.66, declining 75.22 points from its previous reported close of 6,012.44. The decline followed the benchmark’s sharp 6.63% rally on October 28, indicating a reversal after the previous session’s strong gains.

The SSE Composite Index dropped 0.82% to 3,651.43, losing 30.04 points from its previous reported level of 3,681.47. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 0.59% to 22,958.65, moving below the 23,000 level.

The contrasting movements across the region underscored the uneven nature of the session. The supplied figures do not establish a common catalyst behind the declines.

Currency and Private Equity Indicators

The Australian Dollar Currency Index gained 0.40% to 70.54, while the FTSE StepStone APAC Private Equity index rose 0.29% to 6,940.55. The PHLX Yen edged up 0.09% to 63.37.

All three indicators posted modest gains, contrasting with losses in South Korea, mainland China and Hong Kong.

Türkiye’s Istanbul Stock Exchange Closed for Republic Day

Türkiye’s Istanbul Stock Exchange was closed for Republic Day on October 29. The holiday closure meant the exchange did not contribute an active trading session to the day’s market performance.

Outlook

The October 29 session highlighted continued divergence across Asian markets. Japan, India and Australia advanced, while South Korea, China and Hong Kong declined. Investors may monitor whether the Nikkei can sustain its recovery toward 65,000, whether the SENSEX can approach 74,000, and whether the KOSPI stabilizes following its reversal from the previous session’s sharp rally.
