Key Points
- Analysts have lowered their 2026 gold price forecast for a second consecutive quarter, with elevated Treasury yields and a stronger US dollar weighing on bullion.
- The median gold price forecast stands at $4,495 per troy ounce for 2026, while the 2027 projection has increased to $4,650.
- Central-bank purchases, fiscal uncertainty and physical demand from Asia could support prices, although a sustained recovery will depend partly on interest-rate expectations.
Gold is facing competing macroeconomic forces as higher US Treasury yields and a stronger dollar challenge its near-term outlook, while central-bank buying and demand for reserve diversification provide longer-term support. The latest analyst forecasts suggest that the market may be entering a period of consolidation before any sustained recovery, with monetary policy, geopolitical developments and concerns about government debt likely to remain important drivers.
Higher Yields and a Stronger Dollar Weigh on Gold
The median gold price forecast for 2026 has declined to $4,495 per troy ounce from $4,509 in the previous quarterly survey, reflecting expectations that interest rates could remain elevated for longer. The corresponding forecast for 2027 has moved in the opposite direction, rising to $4,650 from $4,610. This divergence suggests that analysts anticipate continued near-term pressure but see scope for a gradual recovery if financial conditions become more supportive.
Gold does not generate interest income, making it relatively less attractive when government bonds offer higher yields. A stronger US dollar can add another headwind by making dollar-priced bullion more expensive for buyers using other currencies. For Israeli investors, movements in the dollar also affect the shekel value of internationally priced gold, meaning local returns can differ from changes in the metal’s dollar price.
Central Banks and Fiscal Risks Provide Structural Support
Despite these pressures, central-bank demand remains an important factor in the gold market. Reserve managers have increasingly viewed bullion as a means of diversifying holdings and reducing dependence on individual currencies. Persistent concerns about government borrowing, fiscal deficits and geopolitical uncertainty may reinforce this role, particularly when investors question the long-term stability of conventional reserve assets.
Physical demand from major Asian markets, including India and China, could also help cushion price declines. However, this support should not be treated as a guaranteed floor. Purchases can fluctuate with local prices, currency movements, consumer purchasing power and broader financial conditions. A stronger dollar and higher real yields could still outweigh these structural sources of demand over shorter periods.
What Could Shape the Next Phase?
The outlook will depend heavily on whether inflation and economic activity keep US monetary policy restrictive. Persistent inflation, elevated energy prices or renewed geopolitical tensions could push bond yields higher and strengthen the dollar, creating further downside risks for gold. Conversely, easing inflation, lower real yields or renewed concerns about fiscal sustainability could improve its relative appeal.
For professional investors and asset allocators, the central question is whether central-bank and physical demand can offset the opportunity cost created by higher yields. Gold may regain momentum if monetary conditions ease, but volatility could remain elevated if expectations for interest rates change abruptly. The next phase will depend on the interaction between Treasury yields, the dollar, official-sector purchases and geopolitical risk rather than any single bullish catalyst.
