Key Points
- Asian equities rebound: South Korea’s KOSPI surged more than 3.9%, Japan’s Nikkei gained 1.9%, and MSCI’s Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan rose 0.9% as renewed enthusiasm for artificial intelligence lifted risk appetite.
- Anthropic filing supports sentiment: The AI company’s US initial public offering filing highlighted rapid revenue growth alongside steep losses, while Meta Platforms’ plans to raise up to $95 billion in its largest-ever equity fundraising helped ease investor concerns.
- Central banks and earnings in focus: Investors are preparing for decisions from the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of Japan, alongside major technology earnings that could clarify whether AI infrastructure spending can deliver sustainable returns.
AI Optimism Returns, but Spending Risks Remain
Asian markets advanced on Tuesday as investors reassessed the outlook for artificial intelligence following Anthropic’s IPO filing. The company behind Claude disclosed strong revenue growth and substantial losses, providing additional information for investors evaluating the commercial potential of the AI sector and the costs associated with its expansion.
The decision to proceed with the filing during recent volatility in AI-related stocks was viewed by some market participants as a sign of confidence. Meta Platforms also supported sentiment with plans to raise as much as $95 billion through its largest-ever equity fundraising.
The rebound followed a difficult period for technology shares. South Korea’s KOSPI remained down approximately 17% for October despite Tuesday’s sharp advance, illustrating the extent of recent investor concerns.
Technology Earnings to Test the Market Rally
Attention is turning to quarterly results from major technology companies, with more than one-third of S&P 500 constituents scheduled to report earnings during the week.
Investors are seeking evidence that demand for AI services is expanding beyond interconnected commercial arrangements among major industry participants. The central question is whether substantial capital expenditure on data centers and other infrastructure reflects durable business demand and can ultimately generate sufficient profitability.
The upcoming results could help determine whether the latest rebound represents a sustainable recovery in AI-related equities or a temporary improvement in sentiment. Nasdaq futures were flat, while European stock futures edged 0.18% lower.
Central Banks Maintain a Cautious Outlook
The Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of Japan are widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged at their upcoming meetings. Consequently, investor attention is likely to center on policymakers’ comments and any signals regarding the timing of future adjustments.
Although the Federal Reserve is expected to hold rates steady this week, persistent inflation concerns have strengthened expectations that monetary easing may remain limited. Traders are pricing in a potential US rate increase in December.
The US 10-year Treasury yield was steady at 4.992%, remaining below the 5% threshold it crossed in September. The Japanese yen traded near 157.61 per dollar ahead of the Bank of Japan’s Friday decision. The central bank is expected to emphasize the risk of inflation exceeding its 2% target, leaving open the possibility of a rate increase as soon as December.
Oil and Gold Reflect Broader Uncertainty
Brent crude futures fell 0.7% to $114.95 a barrel, retreating from a six-month high as investors weighed the possibility of a resolution to the US-Israeli war with Iran.
However, supply risks remain a central concern. Any developments threatening physical oil exports could push Brent back toward recent highs and potentially toward $120 a barrel. The conflict has contributed to higher energy prices, renewed inflation concerns and uncertainty over the global interest-rate outlook.
Gold edged lower to $4,013.70 per ounce as markets assessed the broader economic and monetary policy environment.
What Investors Should Watch Next
The durability of the Asian stock market rebound will depend on whether technology earnings validate expectations for AI-driven growth and whether companies demonstrate a credible path toward returns on infrastructure investment. Central bank guidance will also be important in determining how investors assess borrowing costs, inflation risks and equity valuations.
Developments in Middle Eastern oil supply remain another key variable. A combination of higher energy prices and restrictive monetary policy could complicate the outlook for corporate earnings and financial markets, even if enthusiasm for AI continues to support selected technology shares.
