Key Points
- Apple acknowledges display defects: Apple confirmed that a small number of its newly launched folding iPhone Duo devices have developed inner-screen problems, including cracks and visible lines near the central hinge.
- Replacement support offered: The company advised affected customers to contact AppleCare for a replacement, but has not disclosed the cause of the reported defects.
- Manufacturing complexity raises questions: Repair specialist iFixit identified a potential stress point near an internal display cable and hinge support bar, although Apple has not confirmed that explanation.
Apple Responds to Early Display Problems
Apple has acknowledged display issues affecting a small number of iPhone Duo units just days after the launch of its first folding iPhone. The company began shipping the device last week, following strong initial demand that saw online orders sell out within minutes.
Reports shared on social media over the weekend showed cracks and lines appearing on the inner display, particularly around the central hinge where the device folds.
Apple confirmed the issue on Monday and said affected customers should contact AppleCare for a replacement. The company did not provide details about the underlying cause or indicate how many devices had been affected.
The early reports come as Apple introduces a new product category that involves more complex manufacturing requirements than conventional smartphones.
Hinge Design Under Scrutiny
The reported damage has prompted questions about the durability of the iPhone Duo’s folding mechanism and internal display structure.
Electronics repair specialist iFixit used teardown footage, patents and computed tomography scans to develop a three-dimensional simulation of the device’s hinge. According to the firm’s analysis, reported damage locations clustered just below the point where a display cable runs beneath the screen near a central support bar.
iFixit suggested that the support bar might not move sufficiently clear of the display during folding, potentially creating a concentrated stress point near the reported break locations.
Apple had not responded to iFixit’s findings at the time of the report. The proposed explanation therefore remains unconfirmed, and the precise cause of the display problems has not been established.
Despite the reported defects, iFixit described the iPhone Duo as the most repairable foldable phone it had tested.
Strong Initial Demand Meets Supply Constraints
The display concerns emerge as Apple faces strong initial demand for the iPhone Duo. Customers reportedly encountered limited inventory after online orders sold out rapidly following the launch.
Analysts have also warned that supply could remain constrained because the device’s folding design is complex to manufacture. The combination of manufacturing challenges and early durability reports could place additional attention on production quality as Apple expands availability.
However, the reported defects affect only a small number of devices, according to Apple’s statement. The available information does not establish whether the issue will affect broader production, delivery schedules or overall sales.
A Fast Response Could Limit Reputational Damage
Francisco Jeronimo, a vice president at market research firm IDC, described Apple’s replacement offer as the appropriate initial response.
He compared the situation with Samsung’s problems involving its original Galaxy Fold in 2019, noting that a fast and transparent response can help contain the damage to an emerging product category.
For Apple, the immediate priority is addressing affected customers while establishing the cause of the display failures. The effectiveness of that response may influence customer confidence as foldable devices compete for a larger share of the smartphone market.
What Investors Should Watch Next
Investors and customers will be watching for further information about the cause of the display defects, the number of affected units and whether Apple introduces any manufacturing or design changes.
The company’s ability to maintain product availability while addressing quality concerns will be important to the early performance of the iPhone Duo. For now, Apple has offered replacements, but the broader implications for production and sales remain uncertain.
