Key Points
- Emerging Stocks Slide: The MSCI emerging-market equity benchmark fell 2.2% on Tuesday, marking its worst daily performance since July as technology shares and AI-linked investments came under pressure.
- Currency Weakness Spreads: Losses in the South Korean won and Taiwanese dollar contributed to a 0.3% decline in the emerging-market currency index, while several Latin American currencies also weakened.
- Investors Reassess AI Valuations: Market attention is shifting from expectations for AI spending growth toward questions about which companies will capture the benefits and whether current valuations justify expected returns.
AI-Related Selloff Weighs on Emerging-Market Equities
Emerging-market stocks recorded their steepest daily decline since July on Tuesday as a deepening selloff in artificial intelligence-related shares pressured technology-heavy markets across Asia.
The MSCI benchmark for developing-market equities fell 2.2%, with Asian stocks accounting for much of the decline. South Korea’s Kospi Index extended its losing streak to the longest in 21 months, while chipmaker SK Hynix led losses. Samsung Electronics also moved lower.
The weakness reflects growing sensitivity to developments in the AI investment cycle. Semiconductor manufacturers and other technology companies have benefited from enthusiasm surrounding AI infrastructure spending, but investors are increasingly questioning whether valuations accurately reflect the potential financial returns.
Chinese memory chipmaker CXMT added another dimension to the competitive landscape by announcing a technological breakthrough in an area that competitors such as Samsung had pursued for years. The development could intensify investor scrutiny of competition within the semiconductor industry.
AI Valuations Become a Central Market Concern
Investor positioning has also become a source of concern. A Bank of America survey indicated that global investors pursuing the AI-driven equity rally had the highest exposure to technology shares since the market rebound following the COVID-19 pandemic six years ago.
Heavy exposure can amplify market movements when investors begin reducing positions simultaneously. As a result, developments affecting expectations for AI-related earnings, spending and competition may have broader implications for emerging-market equities.
Felipe Barragán, senior research strategist at Pepperstone, said the debate has shifted toward identifying which companies will capture the benefits of AI investment and determining whether their valuations support the returns investors expect.
This shift suggests that market participants are becoming more selective about AI-related opportunities rather than treating the sector’s overall growth prospects as sufficient justification for higher share prices.
Emerging-Market Currencies Face Additional Pressure
The equity selloff also weighed on emerging-market currencies. Weakness in the South Korean won and Taiwanese dollar helped push the index tracking developing-market currencies down 0.3%.
The currency gauge was subsequently little changed following comments from Federal Reserve Bank of New York President John Williams. Williams said he continued to view one additional interest-rate increase this year as appropriate, although he currently did not expect another increase to be necessary in 2027.
His remarks provided additional context for currency investors assessing the outlook for U.S. monetary policy, although the emerging-market currency index remained sensitive to broader market developments.
Latin American Currencies Decline as Rupee Gains
Latin American currencies were broadly weaker as trading resumed across most markets following Monday holidays. The Chilean peso declined approximately 0.5%, while the Brazilian real fell 0.8%.
India’s rupee moved in the opposite direction, outperforming regional peers and extending its gains for the week to 1.5%. The advance followed the central bank’s decision to widen restrictions on certain derivative transactions in an effort to support the currency.
The contrasting performances highlight the importance of country-specific policy measures alongside global risk sentiment in determining currency movements.
Debt Negotiations Add to Emerging-Market Risks
Credit markets also faced a separate concern involving Senegal. The country’s year-end objective of finalizing an agreement with the International Monetary Fund and securing a debt-relief deal with bondholders was already encountering delays.
The combination of technology-sector volatility, currency weakness and unresolved debt negotiations underscores the range of risks facing emerging markets. Investors will be watching AI-related equity performance, Federal Reserve policy signals, currency trends and progress on Senegal’s negotiations for indications of whether pressure across developing markets will persist.
