The third-quarter earnings season began with contrasting results from JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citigroup, highlighting the uneven conditions facing the U.S. banking sector. For global investors, including Israeli institutional portfolios with exposure to U.S. equities and financial stocks, the reports offer an early test of whether capital-markets activity and lending income can offset higher funding costs and a less predictable economic environment.

Mixed Results Reveal Different Sources of Strength

JPMorgan reported earnings of approximately $5.75 per share and revenue of $50.9 billion, below analysts’ expectations, as fixed-income trading revenue weakened. However, the bank’s results also need to be assessed against its scale and diversified business model. Wells Fargo reported earnings of $1.87 per share on revenue of $21.87 billion, with performance reflecting a more measured revenue picture.

Goldman Sachs delivered a stronger quarter, reporting earnings of $17.01 per share and revenue of $18.68 billion, up 23% year over year. Its global banking and markets division benefited from stronger activity, with equities trading providing a notable contribution. Citigroup also exceeded expectations, reporting earnings of $2.85 per share and revenue of $23.8 billion, supported by growth in services and markets. The divergence underscores that bank earnings depend not only on interest rates, but also on trading conditions, dealmaking and the mix of business each institution generates.

Interest Rates and Credit Conditions Remain Central

Elevated Treasury yields are a key factor for banks and their customers. Higher rates can support lending margins when loan yields adjust faster than deposit costs, but they can also increase borrowing expenses for households and businesses, weigh on loan demand and raise refinancing risks. The impact varies by institution, depending on deposit sensitivity, loan composition and balance-sheet positioning.

Investors will therefore look beyond headline earnings to **net interest income, deposit costs, loan growth and credit-loss provisions**. Any deterioration in delinquency trends or a rise in provisions could signal that pressure is building beneath otherwise solid revenue figures. Conversely, stable credit quality and resilient lending demand would suggest that borrowers are managing the higher-rate environment more effectively than feared.

Outlook: Guidance May Matter More Than the Headlines

The results are an early indication rather than a complete assessment of the sector. Bank of America and Morgan Stanley are scheduled to report on Wednesday, extending the comparison across consumer banking, wealth management and capital markets. Management commentary on deal pipelines, trading activity, loan demand and expected credit losses will be particularly important.

For Israeli investors, U.S. bank performance also feeds into broader assessments of global growth, market liquidity and the direction of the dollar. Currency movements can affect shekel-based returns, while geopolitical tensions and energy-price volatility could complicate the inflation and interest-rate outlook. The next phase of earnings season may strengthen confidence if revenue growth remains broad and credit quality stable, but results that depend heavily on volatile trading income would offer a less durable signal. The focus should remain on forward guidance and balance-sheet resilience, not simply on whether a bank beats quarterly estimates.
