Key Points

  • Amazon is reportedly in talks to acquire AI startup Decart in a deal valued at approximately $7 billion, although no agreement has been confirmed.
  • Decart reportedly increased real-time video generation performance from 26 frames per second on GPUs to approximately 101 frames per second using Amazon’s Trainium chips.
  • The potential acquisition could strengthen AWS’s custom AI chip strategy, reduce dependence on Nvidia and make AI computing more cost-efficient.

Amazon is reportedly considering a roughly $7 billion acquisition of Decart, an AI startup developing real-time video generation technology and software that helps developers run AI models across different chip architectures. The reported talks highlight a growing competition among major technology companies to control the infrastructure powering artificial intelligence, as performance, availability and computing costs become increasingly important to long-term profitability.

Decart’s Performance Gains Put Trainium in Focus

Decart has attracted attention for its ability to run demanding AI workloads on Amazon Web Services’ custom Trainium processors. In a reported performance comparison, the startup increased real-time video generation from approximately 26 frames per second on graphics processing units (GPUs) to around 101 frames per second on Trainium. That represents nearly a fourfold increase in frame throughput under the tested conditions.

The result is significant because generating video in real time requires substantial computing power. Higher throughput and lower latency can make interactive video applications more practical, while better efficiency could reduce the cost of operating AI services at scale. However, a specific benchmark does not establish that Trainium will outperform GPUs across all AI workloads. Results depend on the model, software optimization, hardware configuration and testing conditions.

Decart also develops AI systems designed to generate and simulate interactive three-dimensional environments. Its technology could support applications spanning creative tools, gaming and other interactive digital experiences.

Why Amazon May Pay a Premium for AI Software

The reported $7 billion transaction would represent a substantial premium to Decart’s most recent reported valuation of nearly $4 billion in May 2026. The company raised $300 million in a funding round that brought its total capital raised to more than $400 million. The acquisition discussions remain unconfirmed, and the reported valuation should not be treated as a finalized purchase price.

For Amazon, the strategic appeal extends beyond acquiring a video-generation startup. AWS has been developing Trainium to compete with Nvidia’s dominant position in AI computing. Custom processors can give cloud providers greater control over infrastructure costs, capacity planning and performance. Yet hardware alone is not enough: developers need software that allows AI models to run efficiently without extensive rewriting or optimization.

Decart’s chip-portability technology could help address that challenge. By making it easier to move workloads between different processors, Amazon could make Trainium more attractive to customers who want alternatives to Nvidia-based infrastructure. Better software compatibility could also help AWS expand the market for its own chips.

What the Potential Deal Means for AI Competition

The reported talks reflect a broader shift in the AI industry, where competitive advantage increasingly depends on the combination of computing hardware, software and access to customers. For Amazon, integrating Decart’s technology could strengthen the AWS ecosystem and create additional opportunities to sell AI computing services to businesses.

The financial outcome would depend on whether the acquired technology can be deployed across a broader range of workloads, attract external customers and deliver sustained cost advantages. A $7 billion valuation also raises questions about execution risk and the time required to generate returns.

Investors will be watching for confirmation of a deal, further details about its terms and evidence that Trainium can deliver measurable performance and cost benefits beyond selected demonstrations. The central question is whether Amazon can turn advances in AI hardware and software into a durable competitive advantage for AWS.
