U.S. equities moved higher during midday trading on October 9 as investors looked beyond the previous session’s artificial intelligence concerns and repositioned ahead of the next corporate earnings season. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.51% to 51,493, the Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.51% to 27,333, and the S&P 500 gained 0.42% to 7,798 as of 11:47 a.m. ET.

Humana Leads Individual Stock Movers

Humana was among the session’s strongest performers, surging 13% after improving its Medicare Advantage rating and receiving an analyst upgrade. The move highlighted the potential for company-specific developments to drive significant gains even as broader markets contend with uncertainty over economic growth and corporate earnings.

Delta Air Lines moved lower after cutting its 2026 earnings outlook and reporting results below analyst expectations. Meanwhile, AT&T and T-Mobile US declined amid concerns about competition following a reported SpaceX spectrum deal. Apple also fell after reports that it had reduced component orders for its next iPhone series because of weaker-than-expected demand.

Technology and Energy Send Mixed Signals

Sector performance remained uneven, with energy stocks among the strongest gainers while technology and industrial shares traded lower. Gold rose 1.33% to $4,190.08, while the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield increased two basis points to 5.26%, keeping borrowing costs and bond-market movements in focus.

The recovery in major indexes suggested that some of the anxiety surrounding AI-related valuations had eased following the previous session’s selloff. However, elevated energy prices and rising Treasury yields continued to create potential headwinds for companies and consumers.

Consumer Confidence Raises Growth Concerns

Consumer sentiment declined to 46.3 in October, marking its fifth consecutive monthly drop and a 13.6% decrease from a year earlier, according to the figures provided. High gasoline prices and rising borrowing costs were cited as pressures on household confidence, while only 31% of respondents said they planned to spend as usual this year.

The weakness presents a contrast with stock indexes trading near record levels. Equity performance can be supported by strong earnings expectations and gains concentrated in large technology companies, even while households face pressure from living costs and financing expenses.

Consumer spending remains an important driver of U.S. economic activity, making the deterioration in sentiment a risk worth monitoring. If households reduce discretionary purchases, businesses outside the strongest-performing market sectors could face weaker demand and increased pressure on earnings.

Earnings Season Becomes the Next Market Test

Investors are increasingly turning their attention to the upcoming earnings season, with expectations for robust corporate results. Companies will need to demonstrate that revenue growth and profitability can withstand elevated costs, changing consumer behavior and continued uncertainty over AI-related spending.

The next phase of market performance may depend on whether earnings deliver enough support to justify elevated equity valuations. Continued strength in corporate results could help sustain the recovery, while weaker consumer demand or disappointing guidance could renew volatility. For now, Thursday’s midday gains indicate resilience, but the divergence between stock-market performance and consumer confidence remains an important signal for investors.
