Meta Platforms has begun restricting advertisements from ByteDance, the Chinese company behind TikTok, across seven markets, escalating competition between two of the world’s largest social media ecosystems. The move highlights how digital platforms are increasingly using control over their advertising infrastructure to protect user engagement and commercial opportunities as brands compete for audiences across short-form video, social networking and online commerce.

Advertising Restrictions Extend Beyond TikTok

The restrictions, which reportedly began taking effect on October 8, apply in the United States, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. The policy covers advertisements and paid marketing messages placed by ByteDance on Meta’s platforms, as well as third-party campaigns that link users to TikTok and other ByteDance properties in the affected countries. Meta’s position is that it does not need to run advertisements from a competitor seeking to draw users away from its applications.

The decision gives Meta greater control over which competitors can purchase access to its advertising audience. For advertisers, however, it creates another restriction in an already fragmented digital marketing landscape, where campaign planning increasingly requires brands to account for platform-specific rules, audience differences and measurement systems. The immediate commercial effect will depend on how much advertising ByteDance and its partners had been placing across Meta’s services in the affected markets.

A Wider Battle for Advertising Budgets and User Attention

Meta and TikTok compete for users’ time, creator activity and brand spending, particularly in short-form video. Meta has expanded Instagram Reels and video recommendations as it seeks to retain audiences and compete with TikTok’s discovery-led format. TikTok, meanwhile, continues to develop its advertising products, including AI-powered tools designed to help marketers reach customers and measure campaign outcomes. The competition therefore extends beyond social media usage: both companies are seeking to capture a larger share of digital advertising expenditure and the commercial activity generated by online discovery.

Meta’s restriction may prevent TikTok from using Meta’s advertising network to promote its own services in the affected markets. It does not, by itself, establish that TikTok’s organic content is being removed from Meta’s platforms, nor does it indicate a general ban on third-party businesses advertising products that may also be available through TikTok. The reported policy is specifically focused on advertising from ByteDance and campaigns directing users to its properties.

Regulatory Pressure Adds Another Layer to the Dispute

The advertising move comes amid wider disputes over social media companies’ responsibilities and competitive practices. TikTok has reportedly declined to run Meta advertisements urging platforms to adopt measures related to children’s online safety, citing its policy on political content. Meta has also sought to encourage TikTok and YouTube to adopt similar protections for teenage users. These developments illustrate how disagreements over advertising access can intersect with public campaigns, platform policies and legal pressure.

Investors will be watching whether the restrictions remain limited to the seven named markets or expand further, and whether ByteDance responds with changes to its own advertising policies or commercial relationships. The broader questions are how platforms balance competitive self-interest with advertiser access, and whether tighter restrictions make digital marketing less flexible for businesses operating across multiple services. Any material financial impact will depend on advertising volumes, the availability of alternative channels and the response of marketers in the affected countries.
