Key Points
- Robinhood is expanding AI-powered trading: The brokerage is rolling out agentic accounts that allow customers to use AI agents to monitor markets and execute trades.
- Autonomous trading can be enabled: Trade-by-trade approval is on by default, but customers can disable it and allow agents to trade independently using funds placed in a separate account.
- Robinhood is targeting mass adoption: About 150,000 customers have already opened agentic accounts through the company’s earlier AI integration, while the new in-app experience is designed to make the technology easier to access.
Robinhood Pushes Agentic Trading Into the Mainstream
Robinhood Markets is expanding its use of artificial intelligence by rolling out agentic trading accounts designed to bring automated investment strategies to everyday retail customers. The move represents another step in the brokerage’s effort to make increasingly sophisticated trading tools accessible through its consumer platform.
The new accounts are being introduced alongside additional products, including perpetual futures tied to cryptocurrencies, options linked to earnings events and plans for weekend stock trading. Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev described the broader strategy as bringing products previously associated with hedge funds, banks and quantitative trading firms to retail investors.
AI Trading Moves Inside the Robinhood App
Robinhood initially opened its trading infrastructure to external AI agents in May. Since then, approximately 150,000 customers have opened agentic accounts, according to the company.
The new product is designed to reduce the friction involved in connecting external AI tools to a brokerage account by putting the agentic experience directly inside Robinhood’s application. The company believes simplifying the process could substantially increase adoption, potentially expanding the user base from hundreds of thousands to millions over time.
Customers Can Give Agents Greater Control
Users can instruct AI agents to monitor markets and execute trades, including recurring strategies that operate when predetermined conditions are met. Trade-by-trade approval is activated by default, giving customers an opportunity to review transactions before they are executed.
Customers can also switch off that approval requirement, allowing the agent to trade autonomously. Importantly, the agents can only access funds transferred into a separate agentic account, creating a defined pool of capital for the automated strategy.
OpenAI and Anthropic Models Power the Platform
Robinhood initially plans to offer customers access to AI models developed by Anthropic and OpenAI. The company will charge customers for model usage through its platform, although one OpenAI model, Luna, will remain free through the end of 2026.
Robinhood has not disclosed whether it has revenue-sharing agreements with its AI partners. That leaves the long-term economics of the model-dependent service unclear as the company expands its AI offering.
Performance Data Remains Limited
The expansion also comes with an important limitation: Robinhood said it has not yet measured or compared the investment performance of customers using agentic accounts with those using non-agentic strategies.
Customers remain responsible for trades executed by their agents. Robinhood product executive Abhishek Fatehpuria expects users will initially commit relatively small portions of their capital while they become more comfortable with autonomous trading, with larger allocations potentially developing over several years.
What Could Determine Agentic Trading’s Growth?
Robinhood’s rollout places the company at the intersection of retail investing and rapidly developing AI technology. The key question is whether convenience can translate into sustained customer adoption without compromising users’ willingness to maintain control over their portfolios.
The initial rollout will provide an early test of how comfortable retail investors are with delegating actual trading decisions to AI. Adoption rates, customer capital allocations and eventually measurable investment outcomes could become important indicators of whether agentic trading evolves from an emerging feature into a mainstream brokerage product.
