Key Points
- Citi’s institutional clients can now accept Stablecoin payments through the bank’s Spring by Citi platform, with Coinbase handling the conversion into fiat currency.
- Clients do not need to hold or manage Stablecoins themselves, while Citi handles settlement as the regulated banking institution.
- The partnership strengthens the connection between traditional financial infrastructure and digital-asset networks, with the services launching initially in the United States.
Citi and Coinbase are expanding their partnership to allow institutional clients to accept Stablecoin payments without directly holding or managing digital assets. The move reflects a broader trend of global banks integrating blockchain infrastructure into traditional payment systems as Stablecoins gain traction for transfers and settlement.
Stablecoin Payments Without Direct Digital-Asset Holdings
Through the integration of Coinbase’s payment infrastructure with Spring by Citi, the bank’s payment acceptance platform, Citi’s institutional clients can allow their customers to pay with Stablecoins at checkout. Coinbase provides the payment and blockchain infrastructure and automatically converts the digital assets into fiat currency.
After the conversion, Citi settles the funds as the regulated banking institution. This means recipient companies do not need to hold Stablecoins, operate a digital wallet or directly manage the crypto component of the transaction. The structure could reduce operational complexity for companies seeking to accept digital payments while continuing to operate within the traditional financial system.
Citi and Coinbase Build a Bridge Between Fiat and Digital Assets
The partnership also includes the use of Citi’s Virtual Account Wallet to enable Coinbase Virtual Accounts. These accounts provide businesses with capabilities similar to a bank account, including the ability to receive, hold and make payments. Incoming fiat funds can be automatically converted into Stablecoins using Citi’s regulated banking infrastructure.
The two companies announced an initial partnership in October 2025 focused on improving the movement of fiat currency into and out of digital-asset systems and strengthening payment infrastructure. The latest expansion turns the relationship into a more direct payments offering for companies and institutional clients.
Implications for the Global Payments Market
Coinbase estimates that its payments infrastructure could address a market of more than 150 million Stablecoin holders worldwide. For multinational companies, the ability to accept payment in Stablecoins while ultimately receiving fiat currency could make it easier to integrate blockchain-based payments into existing systems, particularly for cross-border transactions.
The new services will initially launch in the United States, with additional capabilities expected over the coming months. Investors will be watching adoption among institutional clients, transaction volumes and potential expansion into additional markets. At the same time, regulatory developments surrounding Stablecoins, settlement costs and the ability of banks and technology companies to integrate digital infrastructure into existing financial systems will remain important factors shaping the next generation of global payments.
