Key Points
- Major Asian equity indexes trade mostly lower in the Tuesday morning session, with six of eight benchmarks declining.
- SSE Composite leads the losses at 1.67%, followed by S&P BSE SENSEX at 1.52%, while Nikkei 225 and KOSPI Composite Index also decline.
- S&P/ASX 200 and Hang Seng post marginal gains, while Japanese Yen Index and Australian Dollar Index edge lower.
Asian markets are trading mostly lower on Tuesday morning, September 29, with six of the eight major equity indexes in the supplied data declining. The sharpest weakness is recorded in mainland China and India, while Japan and South Korea also trade lower. Australia and Hong Kong remain comparatively stable, posting only marginal gains, while both currency indexes move slightly lower.
China and India Lead Regional Declines
Mainland China is recording the largest decline among the major Asian equity indexes. The SSE Composite Index falls 1.67% to 3,823.62, placing it below the 3,900 level. The move represents the steepest decline among the eight major benchmarks provided for the morning session.
India is also under significant pressure, with the S&P BSE SENSEX declining 1.52% to 72,771.72. The benchmark moves below 73,000 as it records the second-largest decline among the major equity indexes in the data.
Japan is lower as well. The Nikkei 225 falls 0.97% to 65,238.69, leaving the benchmark close to the 65,000 level. The decline places Japan among the major Asian markets contributing to the weaker regional equity performance.
South Korea Weakens While Australia and Hong Kong Hold Steady
South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index declines 0.84% to 6,831.98. The benchmark remains below the 7,000 level, extending the negative performance seen across several major Asian equity markets during the morning session.
Hong Kong is showing considerably less movement. The Hang Seng rises 0.02% to 24,648.64, leaving the index near 24,650. The marginal increase contrasts with the larger declines recorded by the SSE Composite, S&P BSE SENSEX, Nikkei 225 and KOSPI Composite Index.
Australia is also slightly higher. The S&P/ASX 200 gains 0.09% to 8,687.50, keeping the benchmark above 8,680. Despite the gains in Australia and Hong Kong, the broader regional picture remains tilted lower because six of the eight major equity indexes are declining.
Currency Indexes Edge Lower
The currency benchmarks are also moving slightly lower during Tuesday morning trading. The Japanese Yen Index declines 0.06% to 63.53, while the Australian Dollar Index falls 0.07% to 70.20.
The moves in both currency indexes are limited compared with the larger changes recorded across several equity markets. The Japanese Yen Index is lower alongside a 0.97% decline in the Nikkei 225, while the Australian Dollar Index slips 0.07% even as the S&P/ASX 200 gains 0.09%.
The currency data therefore points to relatively limited movement, while equity performance remains the dominant feature of the regional session.
Outlook: Watching Key Asian Index Levels
Investors will monitor whether the declines across mainland China, India, Japan and South Korea continue as the morning session progresses. Key levels include the SSE Composite at 3,823.62, the S&P BSE SENSEX at 72,771.72, the Nikkei 225 at 65,238.69 and the KOSPI Composite Index at 6,831.98. The Hang Seng at 24,648.64 and S&P/ASX 200 at 8,687.50 will also be watched to determine whether their marginal gains can hold. In the currency market, further movement in the Japanese Yen Index at 63.53 and Australian Dollar Index at 70.20 will provide additional signals as investors assess the direction of Asian markets through the remainder of the session.
