- Meta Platforms has appointed MongoDB CEO Chirantan “CJ” Desai to lead its newly created Meta Enterprise Platform, expanding its AI strategy into corporate markets.
- MongoDB shares fell 18% in morning trading after Desai announced his departure less than a year after becoming CEO.

Meta Platforms is expanding its artificial-intelligence strategy into the enterprise market, hiring MongoDB Chief Executive Chirantan “CJ” Desai to lead a newly established business focused on corporate customers. The move highlights the intensifying competition to commercialize AI beyond consumer applications while triggering a sharp reaction in MongoDB shares as investors absorb an unexpected leadership transition.
Meta Creates a New Enterprise AI Business
Meta announced on September 28 that it was launching the Meta Enterprise Platform, describing it as a new major pillar of the company’s business. The platform will initially bring Meta’s AI technology stack to businesses and developers, including the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said the initiative is designed to help businesses use AI to grow and transform their operations.
Desai will serve as Meta’s Chief Enterprise Platform Officer and report directly to Zuckerberg. His background is particularly relevant to the initiative because he has experience across enterprise software, AI, infrastructure, business applications and security. Before joining MongoDB, he led product and engineering at Cloudflare and spent nearly eight years at ServiceNow, including serving as president and chief operating officer.
MongoDB Faces Sudden Leadership Change
Desai’s departure came less than a year after he became MongoDB’s president and CEO in November 2025, succeeding Dev Ittycheria. MongoDB’s board immediately appointed Ittycheria as interim president and CEO while beginning a search for a permanent successor and retaining an executive search firm.
The leadership change produced an immediate market reaction. MongoDB shares fell 18% in morning trading on September 28, reflecting investor concerns over the abrupt departure of a chief executive who had spent less than a year in the role. Reuters reported that the company’s shares had already fallen roughly 20% in premarket trading.
The return of Ittycheria provides continuity while the board searches for a permanent leader. During his previous 11-year tenure as MongoDB CEO, the company expanded from approximately $35 million to more than $2.3 billion in annual revenue, according to MongoDB’s announcement.
Enterprise AI Becomes the Next Competitive Frontier
Meta’s decision to establish a dedicated enterprise platform reflects the broader shift in the AI industry toward monetizing models and agents through business workflows. Rather than limiting AI products to consumer-facing applications, Meta intends to provide companies with tools that can be deployed directly across their operations and development environments.
The strategy also places Meta closer to established enterprise technology providers. MongoDB, Cloudflare and ServiceNow operate within ecosystems where businesses depend on software infrastructure, data management and developer tools. Desai’s experience across these companies gives Meta an executive with direct exposure to the purchasing priorities and technical requirements of enterprise customers.
What the Enterprise Push Could Mean for Meta
For Meta, the enterprise initiative creates a potential new commercial channel for its growing AI infrastructure and software capabilities. The company said the platform will combine advanced models, AI agents, large-scale infrastructure and enterprise experience while incorporating security and privacy into its products from the outset.
The next phase will depend on how quickly Meta converts the newly announced platform into customer adoption and recurring enterprise revenue. Investors will be watching for product launches, customer relationships, pricing and evidence that Meta can translate its consumer-scale AI capabilities into business applications. For MongoDB, the focus shifts to the leadership transition and whether the company can maintain operational momentum while identifying a permanent CEO. The developments underscore how rapidly AI is reshaping competitive boundaries across the global technology sector.
