Global equity markets recorded broad gains on September 21, with strong advances across the major U.S. and European benchmarks. Asian markets that traded also moved higher, although Japan was closed for a holiday. Tel Aviv did not hold a trading session because the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange was closed for Yom Kippur.
Attention now shifts to September 22, when additional regional exchange closures will limit trading activity. The Tokyo Stock Exchange will be closed for a holiday, while the Sofia Stock Exchange will be closed for Bulgaria’s Independence Day. Markets that remain open will continue to assess economic data, monetary-policy expectations, corporate developments and geopolitical risks.
America: Nasdaq Leads Broad-Based U.S. Gains
U.S. equities posted a strong advance on September 21. The Nasdaq climbed 2.26% to 27,122.09, marking the largest gain among the major U.S. benchmarks. The S&P 500 rose 1.49% to 7,764.70, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.71% to 52,048.83.
Other major equity benchmarks also advanced. The Russell 2000 increased 0.52% to 2,875.36, while Brazil’s IBOVESPA gained 0.74% to 186,595.59. Canada’s S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 0.57% to 36,009.40.
The U.S. Dollar Index declined 0.08% to 100.35. The VIX stood at 14.87, up 0.41%.
The American equity session was therefore uniformly positive across all six supplied equity benchmarks, with the Nasdaq and S&P 500 recording the strongest gains.
Europe: Broad Gains Across All Major Supplied Benchmarks
European equities also advanced broadly on September 21. EURO STOXX 50 gained 1.31% to 6,318.20, while MSCI Europe rose 1.11% to 2,802.11. Germany’s DAX advanced 1.07% to 25,575.01.
France’s CAC 40 climbed 0.92% to 8,138.94, the Euronext 100 Index increased 0.89% to 1,897.91, and the FTSE 100 gained 0.75% to 10,739.01.
Currency indexes moved lower. The Euro Index declined 0.15% to 114.68, while the British Pound Index fell 0.18% to 133.68.
All six supplied European equity benchmarks finished higher, with EURO STOXX 50 recording the largest gain.
Asia: Broad Gains Among Markets That Traded
Asian equity markets that traded on September 21 recorded gains, while Japan was closed for Respect for the Aged Day. South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index rose 1.65% to 7,007.72, the strongest gain among the supplied Asian equity benchmarks.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng advanced 1.18% to 25,042.71, while China’s SSE Composite Index gained 0.97% to 3,949.91. India’s S&P BSE SENSEX rose 0.87% to 74,942.80. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 was nearly unchanged, edging up 0.01% to 8,731.90.
The Australian Dollar Index increased 0.18% to 71.25, while the Japanese Yen Index declined 0.56% to 63.75. The Nikkei 225 had no September 21 closing change because the Tokyo Stock Exchange was closed.
Tel Aviv: TASE Closed for Yom Kippur
The Tel Aviv Stock Exchange was closed on September 21 for Yom Kippur. As a result, there was no domestic equity trading session and no new September 21 closing data for the TA-35, TA-90, TA-125 or the other supplied Tel Aviv benchmarks.
The closure also meant that Tel Aviv equities did not participate in the broad gains recorded in the U.S., Europe and the Asian markets that remained open. The next domestic market signal will come when trading resumes after the holiday, with global market movements during the closure providing the external backdrop.
Outlook for September 22: Holiday Closures Keep Liquidity in Focus
The September 22 session will be affected by two regional exchange closures. The Tokyo Stock Exchange will be closed for a holiday, while the Sofia Stock Exchange will be closed for Bulgaria’s Independence Day. These closures will reduce the availability of fresh price signals from the affected markets.
Markets that remain open will focus on economic indicators, central bank expectations, inflation developments, corporate earnings and geopolitical developments. Currency and bond-market movements will also remain important as investors assess the outlook for interest rates, economic growth and broader financial conditions.
With U.S. and European equities having posted broad gains on September 21 and Asian markets that traded also moving higher, investors will monitor whether this positive tone extends into September 22. Trading volumes and liquidity may be affected by the regional holidays, while incoming macroeconomic data and geopolitical developments could influence market volatility.
