Key Points

  • Costco nearly doubled the price of its Kirkland Signature full-synthetic motor oil to $57.99 and limited purchases to two packs per member each week.
  • The U.S. relies heavily on Persian Gulf supplies of Group III base oils, exposing retailers to disruptions linked to the conflict and damaged production facilities.
  • Walmart and Amazon have not announced comparable price increases or purchase limits, highlighting differences in sourcing, inventory and supply-chain exposure.

Costco Wholesale has taken an unusual step for a retailer known for aggressive pricing, sharply raising the price of its Kirkland Signature full-synthetic motor oil while limiting how much members can buy. The move shows how disruptions in the Persian Gulf are moving beyond crude oil and fuel markets into everyday consumer products, creating a supply-chain challenge that could spread across the U.S. retail sector.

Costco Passes a Supply Shock to Consumers

Costco now sells a 10-quart package of Kirkland Signature full-synthetic motor oil for $57.99, compared with roughly $30 previously. The company has also limited members to two packages per week. Similar restrictions have been imposed on Mobil 1 full-synthetic motor oil, with purchases of its six-quart package capped at five per membership.

The immediate pressure comes from the market for Group III base oils, a key ingredient in synthetic lubricants. The U.S. sources roughly 44% of its Group III base oil imports from the Persian Gulf, leaving the supply chain particularly exposed to disruptions in the region. Damage to major production infrastructure, combined with broader disruptions to energy shipments, has tightened availability.

Why the Gulf Matters Beyond Crude Oil

The supply problem goes beyond the direct impact of higher crude prices. Refiners have stronger economic incentives to produce diesel and jet fuel when those products command higher prices, potentially reducing the amount of crude-derived feedstock available for motor-oil production.

The result is a squeeze on a product that normally attracts little attention from investors but plays an important role in the automotive economy. U.S. motor-oil prices increased 24.2% between February and August, while the cost of oil changes has also risen. With Brent crude above $100 per barrel, pressure on petroleum-related products is likely to remain elevated as long as supply routes and refining economics remain disrupted.

Walmart and Amazon Highlight Different Exposure

Costco’s decision also highlights differences between major retailers. Walmart and Amazon have not announced comparable motor-oil price increases or purchase limits, although that does not mean they are immune to the underlying supply constraints. Their broader supplier networks, different inventory structures and product mixes may give them more flexibility in managing individual shortages.

For Costco, the episode is particularly relevant because its pricing model depends on maintaining a reputation for value. A sharp price increase on a familiar Kirkland product, combined with purchasing restrictions, shows how difficult it can be to preserve that model when a critical input is concentrated in one geographic region.

Going forward, investors will be watching the availability and pricing of Group III base oils, the pace of repairs at damaged Gulf facilities and global crude prices. A prolonged disruption could push higher costs into lubricants, vehicle maintenance and other petroleum-based products. The episode also reinforces a broader market issue: supply-chain diversification is becoming an increasingly important competitive factor for retailers operating in an environment where geopolitical disruptions can quickly reach consumers.
