Wayve Strengthens Leadership Ahead of Commercial Expansion

Self-driving technology company Wayve is bringing in Elisa de Martel as chief financial officer at a pivotal point in its development. The appointment comes as the company transitions from technology development and testing toward broader deployment of its automated-driving systems in robotaxis and consumer vehicles.

De Martel replaces Max Warburton, who served as Wayve’s CFO since 2024 and will move into a strategic advisory position. Her responsibilities will extend beyond traditional financial management, covering capital allocation, financial planning, reporting, governance, treasury and tax while also supporting commercial agreements, investors and strategic partnerships.

A CFO With Deep Technology Experience

De Martel brings a combination of financial leadership and experience across advanced technology businesses. Before joining Wayve, she was CFO at Waymo from 2022 through January 2026, during a period when the autonomous-vehicle company expanded commercial operations across multiple cities and secured $5.6 billion through a Series C financing round that valued it at more than $45 billion.

Her earlier career also included 11 years as manufacturing finance director at Apple and a CFO position at industrial 3D-printing company Carbon. That background could be particularly relevant to Wayve as it attempts to navigate the transition from software development into a business increasingly connected to vehicle production, automotive partnerships and commercial deployment.

Wayve’s Technology Targets a Broader Automotive Market

Founded in 2017, Wayve has built its autonomous-driving platform around an end-to-end neural network designed to learn driving behavior from data rather than depending on high-definition maps, specialized hardware or extensive hand-coded rules. The company has developed two systems: an “eyes on” assisted-driving product and an “eyes off” system designed for fully automated driving in specific environments.

The hardware-agnostic approach has helped Wayve attract automotive partners that already have established vehicle platforms. The company has raised approximately $3.2 billion and is valued at about $8.5 billion, while its technology has also attracted interest from companies seeking autonomous mobility services.

From Robotaxi Trials to Automotive Scale

Wayve has established partnerships with automakers including Nissan and Stellantis and is also working with Uber on robotaxi ambitions. Public rides have recently begun in London with a human safety operator present, while Tokyo is expected to become another deployment market.

These early operations represent an important test of whether Wayve’s technology can move beyond controlled development environments and into repeatable commercial use. The challenge is not simply demonstrating autonomous driving, but establishing the reliability, economics and partnerships required to become a high-volume automotive technology supplier.

What Investors Will Watch Next

De Martel’s arrival places financial strategy at the center of Wayve’s next phase. Investors and industry partners will be watching how the company allocates its substantial capital base, expands commercial relationships and converts early deployments into scalable revenue opportunities.

The transition from promising autonomous-driving technology to large-scale automotive deployment remains one of the most difficult stages for companies in the sector. Wayve’s progress across robotaxis, passenger vehicles and manufacturer partnerships will therefore be critical in determining whether its technology can support the commercial scale implied by its valuation.
