Asian markets broadly recovered on September 16, 2026, following the widespread declines recorded in the previous session. South Korea led the rebound, while mainland China, Japan and India also posted gains. The recovery was broad across equity benchmarks, although both reported Asian currency indexes moved lower.

South Korea Leads the Rebound

The KOSPI Composite Index was the strongest reported equity benchmark, rising 1.37% to 6,717.97. The gain followed a 0.85% decline on September 15 and a much sharper 3.26% drop on September 14.

The recovery brought the KOSPI back above 6,700, a level that had become an important short-term reference after the benchmark’s recent decline below 7,000. The move indicates that buyers returned to the market after the recent selling pressure, although the index remains below its September 10 close above 7,000.

China and Japan Recover

The SSE Composite Index gained 0.71% to 3,891.60, recovering from its 0.54% decline in the previous session. The benchmark moved back toward 3,900 after falling to 3,864.28 on September 15.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 also advanced, rising 0.69% to 63,923.00. The gain follows a virtually unchanged session on September 15 and a 0.81% decline on September 14. The benchmark is now approaching the 64,000 level, which could serve as an important near-term threshold.

India and Australia Post Modest Gains

The S&P BSE SENSEX increased 0.45% to 74,336.45. The recovery followed a 0.83% decline on September 15, but the benchmark remained below 75,000.

The S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.28% to 8,696.50, extending a modest recovery from the previous session’s 0.88% decline. The benchmark remains below 8,700 and well below the 9,000 level reached earlier in September.

Hong Kong Stabilizes

The Hang Seng gained 0.19% to 24,713.78 after falling 1.00% on September 15. The modest recovery kept the index below 25,000, but it provided some stabilization after several sessions of weakness.

The Australian Dollar Index slipped 0.10% to 71.30, while the Japanese Yen Index declined 0.52% to 64.45. The currency moves contrasted with the gains across most regional equity markets.

Outlook

The September 16 session provides evidence of a broad but measured recovery across Asian equities. The KOSPI’s return above 6,700, the SSE Composite’s approach to 3,900 and the Nikkei’s move toward 64,000 will be important levels to monitor in the next session. The Hang Seng remains below 25,000, the Sensex below 75,000 and the ASX 200 below 8,700, leaving several major benchmarks at levels where further gains could determine whether the latest rebound develops into a more sustained stabilization.
