Key Points

  • U.S. Treasury yields reached their highest level since 2007, while German Bund yields climbed to their highest level since 2009 as inflation and fiscal concerns intensified.
  • Brent crude settled above $108 a barrel as renewed attacks in the Middle East raised concerns about energy supply and added pressure to the global inflation outlook.
  • Global equities extended their decline, with Wall Street's three major indexes ending lower as higher borrowing costs and geopolitical risks weighed on investor sentiment.

Global financial markets faced renewed pressure on September 15 as government bond yields climbed sharply and oil prices extended their advance, creating a difficult combination for equities. The move reflects growing concern that elevated energy prices could reinforce inflation at a time when major central banks are reassessing interest-rate policy and governments face increasingly expensive borrowing costs.

US Treasury Yields Reach Levels Not Seen Since 2007

The benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield reached around 5%, with the yield rising 4.5 basis points during Tuesday’s session. The move represents its highest level since 2007 and extends a sustained increase over the past month. Investors have been demanding higher compensation amid concerns over inflation, heavy government debt issuance, resilient economic growth and the longer-term US fiscal outlook.

Higher Treasury yields have implications well beyond government debt markets. They influence corporate financing costs, mortgage rates, consumer borrowing and equity valuations, particularly when investors reassess the discount rate applied to future corporate earnings. The increase therefore represents a broader tightening in global financial conditions even before accounting for monetary-policy decisions.

Oil Above $108 Raises Inflation and Policy Risks

Brent crude settled above $108 per barrel as renewed attacks involving Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis raised concerns about Saudi energy supplies and the wider flow of oil from the Middle East. Energy markets have already been under pressure following disruptions associated with the conflict, while the latest developments have added another layer of uncertainty to global supply conditions.

The importance for financial markets lies in the interaction between energy prices and inflation expectations. A sustained increase in oil prices can raise transportation, manufacturing and household energy costs, potentially slowing the progress of disinflation. That creates a more complicated environment for central banks because weaker economic activity can argue for easier policy while higher inflation can require tighter financial conditions.

Global Equities Absorb the Bond and Energy Shock

The pressure was visible across major equity markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.63%, while the S&P 500 declined 0.45% and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.78%. Europe’s STOXX 600 also declined 0.28%, while MSCI’s global equity index fell 0.5%. Energy shares were among the stronger performers on Wall Street, reflecting the contrast between higher commodity prices and pressure on more interest-rate-sensitive sectors.

European bond markets are experiencing a similar repricing. German 10-year Bund yields rose to 3.56%, their highest level in more than 17 years, underscoring that the rise in borrowing costs is not confined to the United States. Across the G7, the average 10-year government bond yield reached 4.285%, the highest since mid-2008, according to Reuters.

Looking ahead, markets will closely monitor oil prices, Treasury yields and central-bank policy signals as investors assess whether the current combination of energy and inflation pressures persists. The Federal Reserve’s policy decision and guidance on the future path of rates will be particularly important, while developments affecting Middle East energy supplies could determine whether the oil shock intensifies or begins to ease. For investors in Israel and globally, the interaction between higher sovereign borrowing costs, energy prices and equity valuations remains a central factor in assessing cross-border market risk.
