Key Points
- The EURO STOXX 50 fell 1.08% to 6,257.05, recording the largest decline among the major European equity benchmarks.
- The Euronext 100 dropped 1.04%, while MSCI Europe, the CAC 40 and DAX also posted declines of more than 0.60%.
- The FTSE 100 rose 0.56% to 10,709.74, while the British Pound Index gained 0.15% and the Euro Index declined 0.09%.
European markets moved broadly lower on September 14, 2026, with most major equity benchmarks recording significant declines. The session marked a reversal from the broad gains seen on September 11, with the EURO STOXX 50 and Euronext 100 registering the steepest losses among the major indexes.
The EURO STOXX 50 fell 1.08% to 6,257.05, while the Euronext 100 Index declined 1.04% to 1,881.64. MSCI Europe also dropped 0.86% to 2,800.19.
Major European Equity Benchmarks Retreat
The CAC 40 declined 0.75% to 8,118.56, while the DAX fell 0.66% to 25,399.86. The declines were broad across continental European markets, with each of these major benchmarks losing more than 0.60%.
The FTSE 100 was the clear exception, rising 0.56% to 10,709.74. Its gain contrasted sharply with the declines across the other major equity indexes in the supplied data and made it the strongest-performing benchmark of the session.
The latest figures also show that the broader European equity indexes remain below their levels recorded at the end of the previous session.
European Currencies Show Mixed Performance
Currency markets were mixed. The British Pound Index advanced 0.15% to 135.28, while the Euro Index slipped 0.09% to 115.98.
The pound therefore strengthened alongside the FTSE 100, while the euro moved lower. The currency performance was notably more restrained than the movements recorded across most European equity benchmarks.
Outlook
European markets begin the new week with a clearly mixed regional picture. The FTSE 100 provided a notable counterpoint to broad weakness across continental Europe, while the EURO STOXX 50, Euronext 100 and MSCI Europe each declined by more than 0.80%. The British pound also strengthened modestly, while the euro edged lower. The next sessions will indicate whether the latest declines represent a broader continuation of weakness or a one-session pullback.
