AI Compute Is Becoming a Major Growth Engine

SpaceX is increasingly positioning itself as more than a space and satellite communications company, with artificial intelligence infrastructure emerging as a potentially transformative source of recurring revenue. CFO Bret Johnsen said the company remains on track to reach $100 billion in annual recurring revenue, with newly signed AI compute agreements providing a significant contribution to that target.

Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference in San Francisco, Johnsen disclosed that SpaceX had closed another hosting agreement earlier in the month. The deal is expected to generate approximately $1.11 billion per month beginning December 1, translating into roughly $13 billion of annual recurring revenue.

Four AI Deals Point to a Rapidly Expanding Revenue Base

The latest agreement adds to a series of large compute contracts already announced by SpaceX. Earlier this year, the company secured an arrangement with Anthropic worth approximately $1.25 billion per month, or $15 billion annually. A separate agreement with Google is valued at approximately $920 million per month, representing about $11.04 billion in annual recurring revenue.

Another six-month agreement worth $6.7 billion was disclosed during SpaceX’s August earnings call. Analyst Louise DiPalma of William Blair believes that contract may involve the U.S. Department of Defense, although the article notes that SpaceX has not publicly identified the customer.

Taken together, the four highlighted compute agreements could represent approximately $45.7 billion in ARR beginning in December. That figure illustrates how quickly terrestrial computing has become strategically important to SpaceX.

Why SpaceX Is Gaining Ground in AI Infrastructure

SpaceX’s competitive advantage appears to center on deployment speed. According to DiPalma, the company has been able to bring computing capacity online faster than competitors during an unprecedented surge in demand for AI infrastructure.

Its relationship with Nvidia also provides an important potential advantage, with the chipmaker providing SpaceX AI with priority allocation of GPUs. Access to advanced computing hardware is increasingly critical as companies and governments compete for AI capacity.

This combination of rapid deployment and GPU availability could allow SpaceX to capture demand while traditional data-center expansion struggles to keep pace.

$100 Billion ARR Target Looks Increasingly Plausible

The scale of the new contracts changes the financial profile of SpaceX. The highlighted AI compute deals alone represent approximately $45.7 billion in ARR. The company’s rocket business contributes roughly $4 billion, based on second-quarter earnings, while Starlink contributes approximately $17.2 billion.

Although these figures do not account for every SpaceX contract or revenue stream, they suggest that the $100 billion target is becoming more attainable if the company’s AI infrastructure continues expanding. Johnsen said he has gained “even more conviction” in reaching the objective.

Expansion Comes With Operational Challenges

The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure is not without risks. SpaceX is reportedly considering slowing the physical buildout of some terrestrial data centers to address operational and reliability concerns. That could create a tension between maintaining rapid capacity growth and ensuring that infrastructure performs consistently at scale.

Meanwhile, Starship could provide another potential growth catalyst. Johnsen indicated that SpaceX was targeting a late-September launch and expected to demonstrate progress toward rocket reusability by the end of the year. If Starship reaches commercial maturity, it could create another significant source of revenue alongside Starlink and AI computing.

The bigger strategic shift, however, is already underway. SpaceX’s AI compute business has moved from a relatively speculative opportunity to one of the company’s most important prospective revenue drivers within just a few quarters. The key question for investors is no longer whether AI will contribute to SpaceX’s growth, but whether the company can scale computing capacity, maintain reliability and convert contracted demand into sustainable cash flow quickly enough to support its ambitious $100 billion ARR target.
