Key Points
- The Nikkei 225 fell 1.93% to 64,011.34, while the KOSPI declined 1.76% to 6,909.91, leading the major equity-market losses.
- The SSE Composite dropped 1.18% to 3,888.11, while the S&P/ASX 200 and Hang Seng declined 0.89% and 0.60%, respectively.
- The Japanese Yen Index fell 0.51% to 64.77 and the Australian Dollar Index declined 0.86% to 71.58, signaling broader weakness across regional currencies.
Asian markets closed broadly lower on September 11, 2026, extending the defensive tone that emerged during the previous session. All eight reported indicators finished in negative territory, with Japan and South Korea recording the steepest equity-market declines while currency weakness added another layer of pressure to regional sentiment.
Japan Leads the Regional Selloff
The Nikkei 225 was the weakest major equity benchmark, falling 1.93% to 64,011.34. The decline erased much of the recent recovery that had kept the index above 65,000 and brought it close to the 64,000 level.
The Japanese Yen Index also weakened, dropping 0.51% to 64.77 after reaching 65.10 in the previous session. The simultaneous decline in the yen and Japanese equities reflects a notable shift from the stronger performance seen earlier in the week.
South Korea Falls Below 7,000
The KOSPI Composite Index declined 1.76% to 6,909.91, falling below the psychologically important 7,000 threshold. The retreat follows its 0.25% decline on September 10 and represents a more pronounced deterioration in short-term momentum.
The move below 7,000 places renewed focus on the benchmark’s ability to establish support around 6,900. A sustained recovery above 7,000 could become necessary before sentiment improves materially.
China and Hong Kong Remain Under Pressure
The SSE Composite Index fell 1.18% to 3,888.11, moving further away from the 4,000 level that had remained a key recovery target. The decline follows a 0.43% loss in the previous session and marks another significant setback for mainland Chinese equities.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 0.60% to 24,805.63. The index remained below 25,000 for a second consecutive session, reinforcing the near-term weakness after it had traded above that level earlier in the month.
Australia and India Also Decline
The S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.89% to 8,741.20, extending its recent weakness below the 9,000 threshold. The Australian Dollar Index declined 0.86% to 71.58, making it the weakest reported currency indicator and signaling broader pressure on Australian assets.
The S&P BSE SENSEX was comparatively resilient, slipping only 0.14% to 74,794.09. Despite the decline, the index remained close to 75,000 and significantly outperformed the sharper losses recorded across Japan, South Korea and China.
Outlook
The September 11 session marks a broad deterioration in Asian market momentum, with all reported indicators ending lower. The Nikkei’s proximity to 64,000, the KOSPI’s move below 7,000, the Hang Seng’s position below 25,000 and the SSE Composite’s decline toward 3,900 will be key levels to monitor in the next session. With the yen and Australian dollar also weakening, investors may remain cautious until regional benchmarks demonstrate that selling pressure is beginning to stabilize.
