How BOIL Delivers Leveraged Natural Gas Exposure

BOIL seeks daily investment results equal to 2x the daily performance of the Bloomberg Natural Gas Subindex, before fees and expenses. The index is based on natural gas futures contracts, meaning the ETF’s performance is tied to movements in the futures market rather than the spot price of physical natural gas. As of September 4, 2026, ProShares reported BOIL holdings with approximately 199.96% exposure to November 2026 natural gas futures, illustrating how the fund maintains its targeted leveraged exposure.

The structure makes BOIL fundamentally different from a conventional commodity ETF. Its objective resets daily, so a 2x daily target does not mean that an investor should expect twice the natural gas index’s return over longer periods.

Performance Highlights the Cost of Volatility

The fund’s recent performance demonstrates the challenges created by prolonged weakness and volatility in natural gas. As of August 31, 2026, BOIL’s NAV had declined 54.57% year to date, 37.42% over six months and 66.05% over one year. Its market-price return was slightly weaker, at -55.52% year to date and -66.58% over one year.

The longer-term record is even more pronounced. BOIL’s NAV return stood at -68.03% over three years and -70.95% over five years through the end of August. These figures illustrate why daily leveraged products can diverge substantially from a simple multiple of an underlying commodity’s cumulative performance.

Natural Gas Fundamentals Remain the Key Driver

The underlying natural gas market remains sensitive to several forces that can quickly alter price direction. U.S. production, storage injections, weather-driven heating and cooling demand, LNG exports and pipeline constraints can all influence futures prices. Changes in expectations around supply and demand can therefore produce sharp daily moves, which are amplified by BOIL’s 2x structure.

The fund also carries an expense ratio of 0.95%, while its futures-based strategy introduces additional considerations related to contract expiration and rolling exposure. These factors can influence returns independently of the headline movement in natural gas prices.

Going forward, investors will likely focus on U.S. storage data, weather forecasts, production trends and LNG demand as major signals for natural gas prices. For BOIL specifically, the key issue is not simply whether natural gas rises or falls, but how consistently it moves and how volatility affects the ETF’s daily compounding over time.
