Key Points
- HSBC raised its year-end 2026 S&P 500 target to 8,100 from 7,650, implying approximately 4.9% upside from the index's latest close.
- The bank expects second-half earnings growth above 25%, supported by continued AI infrastructure spending and a resilient consumer backdrop.
- Valuations, Federal Reserve policy, geopolitical risks, and the sustainability of AI investment remain important downside factors for U.S. equities.
HSBC has raised its year-end target for the S&P 500 to 8,100 from 7,650, arguing that stronger corporate earnings and sustained investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure could extend the U.S. equity rally. The revised target represents approximately 4.9% potential upside from the index’s latest close of 7,718.60, although the forecast comes as investors continue to navigate elevated geopolitical and monetary-policy uncertainty.
Earnings Strength Provides the Core of HSBC’s Forecast
HSBC’s revised outlook is primarily based on expectations for continued earnings momentum. The bank estimates that S&P 500 earnings-per-share growth was running at close to 40% during the first half of 2026 and expects growth of more than 25% during the second half. For the full year, HSBC forecasts earnings growth of approximately 33%, equivalent to about $360 in earnings per share, while applying a 22.5-times price-to-earnings multiple.
Recent corporate results provide some support for that assessment. According to LSEG data cited by Reuters, 86% of 492 S&P 500 companies that had reported second-quarter results exceeded analyst expectations, compared with a long-term average beat rate of 67.5%. The breadth of earnings strength could remain an important factor in determining whether the market can sustain elevated valuations.
AI Investment Remains a Major Market Catalyst
HSBC also identifies AI capital expenditure as a central driver of its forecast. Continued spending on data centers, semiconductors, computing infrastructure, and related technologies is expected to support technology companies while creating demand across other parts of the U.S. corporate sector. The bank also points to a relatively resilient consumer environment as an additional support for companies outside the technology sector.
However, the sustainability of this investment cycle remains an important consideration. Technology shares have continued to deliver strong earnings and margins, but HSBC noted that valuations have remained within a relatively narrow range, suggesting that further multiple expansion may be more difficult to achieve without continued improvement in underlying profits.
Outlook: Earnings Versus Macro Risks
Outlook: The revised HSBC target provides a constructive scenario for U.S. equities, but it should not be interpreted as a certainty. The market remains exposed to Federal Reserve policy, inflation, Treasury yields, geopolitical tensions, U.S. fiscal developments, and the November midterm elections. A stronger-than-expected inflation path or renewed geopolitical escalation could pressure valuations, particularly if higher energy prices keep monetary policy restrictive. Conversely, continued earnings resilience, broadening market participation, and sustained productivity gains from AI could improve the probability of further index gains. For Israeli investors with exposure to U.S. equities, the outlook also remains sensitive to U.S. dollar movements and global risk appetite, reinforcing the importance of monitoring both earnings fundamentals and macroeconomic conditions.
