Key Points
- Five Below’s second-quarter sales increased 22.9% to $1.26 billion, while comparable sales rose 14.1%, marking the retailer’s fifth consecutive quarter of double-digit comparable-sales growth.
- The retailer is broadening its merchandising strategy by integrating products priced above $5 throughout its stores while emphasizing trend-driven merchandise, social-media demand and frequent product refreshes.
- Five Below raised its fiscal 2026 outlook, now targeting $5.63 billion to $5.71 billion in sales and adjusted diluted EPS of $9.83 to $10.31.
Five Below is demonstrating that value retail can still generate strong growth when low prices are combined with a rapidly changing merchandise strategy. The U.S. retailer’s latest results show that higher store traffic, new product categories and a broader pricing architecture are translating into substantial sales growth even as consumers remain sensitive to inflation, tariffs and household budgets.
A Customer-Centric Strategy Is Driving Stronger Store Performance
Five Below’s second-quarter results provide the clearest evidence yet that its strategy is gaining traction. For the quarter ended August 1, net sales increased 22.9% to $1.26 billion, while comparable sales rose 14.1%. The company has now recorded five consecutive quarters of double-digit comparable-sales growth, indicating that the improvement is extending beyond the contribution from newly opened stores.
The retailer also opened 52 net new stores during the quarter, bringing its footprint to 2,022 locations across 46 states. Store count was 8.8% higher than a year earlier, demonstrating that Five Below is simultaneously pursuing physical expansion and stronger productivity from its existing locations. Adjusted diluted earnings per share increased to $1.68 from $0.81 a year earlier.
That combination is important for the retail sector. Sales growth driven solely by new stores can eventually become constrained by the size and productivity of the existing footprint. Five Below’s comparable-sales performance suggests that its current strategy is generating demand from both new and existing customers.
Five Below Is Changing What “Value” Means
The company’s strategic shift goes beyond simply offering low prices. Five Below has been integrating merchandise priced above $5 into the broader store assortment rather than isolating those products in a separate Five Beyond section. The objective is to make higher-priced products easier for shoppers to discover while maintaining the retailer’s core value proposition. More than 80% of its assortment remained priced at $5 or less when management discussed the strategy earlier this year.
At the same time, Five Below is emphasizing a continuous flow of new and trend-driven products. Categories such as collectibles, beauty, candy, Pokémon merchandise and viral toys are designed to create reasons for consumers to return frequently. The company has also used social-media listening and creator engagement to identify products capable of gaining momentum rapidly.
This approach effectively turns the store into a constantly changing merchandising environment. Rather than competing solely on price, Five Below is attempting to combine affordability, discovery and product novelty. That distinction matters as discount retailers increasingly compete for consumers who remain cautious about discretionary spending.
Higher Guidance Raises the Stakes for the Turnaround
Management has raised its fiscal 2026 outlook substantially following the strong first half. Five Below now expects net sales of $5.63 billion to $5.71 billion, compared with its previous range of $5.40 billion to $5.48 billion. Comparable sales are expected to increase 10% to 12%, compared with the previous forecast of 6% to 8%. Adjusted diluted EPS guidance was raised to $9.83 to $10.31 from $8.65 to $9.05.
The company expects approximately 150 net new stores for the full fiscal year and comparable-sales growth of 8% to 10% in the third quarter. However, the outlook still incorporates the impact of tariffs currently in place, while transportation and fuel costs remain potential pressure points for the retail sector.
The central question now is whether Five Below can sustain its momentum as the comparison base becomes more demanding. Expanding the assortment above $5 could increase transaction values, but it also introduces a risk that the retailer’s traditional value identity becomes less distinct. Similarly, trend-driven merchandise can generate traffic quickly but requires consistently accurate merchandising decisions.
For investors and global observers of the U.S. consumer, the next several quarters will therefore provide an important test of whether Five Below’s operating flywheel can remain effective across a larger store base. Sustained comparable-sales growth, disciplined store expansion and resilient margins will be key indicators of whether the strategy represents a durable structural improvement rather than a temporary retail upswing.
