Key Points
- Ciena has emerged as a major beneficiary of AI infrastructure spending, with second-quarter 2026 revenue reaching $1.57 billion, up 40% year over year, while backlog climbed to $7.7 billion.
- A valuation model based on 26.6% annual revenue growth, 23.2% operating margins and a 34.9x earnings multiple projects a potential share price of $524.55 by October 2028.
- The investment case depends heavily on hyperscaler spending, the conversion of Ciena’s backlog into revenue and the adoption of newer platforms such as Hyper-Rail and DCOM.
Ciena’s latest results highlight how rapidly AI is changing the economics of data-center networking. Revenue reached $1.57 billion in the second quarter of 2026, representing 40% year-over-year growth, while adjusted gross margin expanded to 44.9%. Adjusted earnings per share also nearly quadrupled to $1.64, demonstrating that stronger demand is beginning to translate into meaningful operating leverage.
Backlog increased by more than $600 million during the quarter to $7.7 billion, providing substantial visibility into future demand. The company is benefiting from the growing realization that increasingly powerful AI computing systems require networking capacity capable of moving enormous quantities of data between accelerators, data centers and cloud infrastructure.
Hyperscalers Could Determine the Next Growth Phase
Ciena’s opportunity is increasingly tied to hyperscalers and data-center connectivity. Optical Networking revenue increased 42% in the second quarter, while revenue from direct cloud customers surged 70%. Service-provider revenue also expanded 28%, supported in part by rapidly growing activity in India and managed optical fiber network deployments.
The company’s first multi-rail order from a leading hyperscaler for its RLS Hyper-Rail platform represents another potentially important milestone. Management has indicated that additional hyperscalers are evaluating the technology, creating an opportunity for a new source of growth as Hyper-Rail begins contributing more significantly from 2027.
DCOM provides another avenue for expansion. Routing and Switching revenue increased 88% year over year, with the company adding a second hyperscaler customer for DCOM while a third customer remains in laboratory qualification. These developments suggest Ciena is expanding beyond traditional optical networking into infrastructure management and interconnect applications associated with increasingly complex AI environments.
Valuation Leaves Less Room for Execution Errors
The bullish operating outlook must be weighed against Ciena’s elevated valuation. The stock trades at roughly 46 times forward earnings, compared with a five-year average of 28.9 times. A valuation model using 26.6% annual revenue growth, a 23.2% operating margin and a 34.9x exit P/E multiple produces a projected share price of $524.55 by October 2028.
That target represents approximately 45.6% upside from the referenced $360.33 share price. The model assumes some valuation compression as growth normalizes, rather than relying on the current premium multiple expanding indefinitely. This makes execution increasingly important: investors are already assigning substantial value to future AI-related growth.
The next several years will hinge on whether hyperscaler capital spending remains strong, whether Ciena can convert its $7.7 billion backlog efficiently and how quickly Hyper-Rail and DCOM achieve broader commercial adoption. Continued acceleration could justify premium valuation levels and create additional upside, while weaker AI infrastructure spending or persistent supply constraints could expose the stock to a sharper multiple contraction. After such a dramatic rally, Ciena’s challenge is no longer proving that AI networking matters—it is demonstrating that future growth can justify what investors are already paying for it.
