Key Points

  • Ford’s Super Duty production exceeded 39,000 units in August, its highest monthly level since March 2006, while F-150 production reached a two-year high.
  • The production increase comes as Ford’s U.S. sales fell 10.3% year over year in August, marking the eighth consecutive monthly decline.
  • Ford is rebuilding truck inventories after aluminum supply disruptions, with higher production expected to improve dealer availability over the coming months.

Ford Motor is sharply increasing production of its critical F-Series pickup trucks even as overall U.S. vehicle sales remain under pressure. The contrasting trends reflect a supply recovery following major aluminum disruptions rather than a sudden improvement in consumer demand, placing greater importance on whether stronger production can translate into higher deliveries and healthier inventories.

F-Series Production Reaches Multi-Year Highs

Ford confirmed that production of its Super Duty trucks exceeded 39,000 units in August, the strongest monthly output since March 2006. Production of the F-150 also reached its highest level since August 2024, marking a significant recovery for two of Ford’s most important and profitable truck lines.

The F-Series includes the F-150 and larger Super Duty models such as the F-250, F-350 and F-450. Production of these vehicles was heavily affected by fires at an aluminum supplier’s facility in Oswego, New York, last year. Ford has worked with supplier Novelis to restore the facility, which returned to normal operations in June after the disruptions constrained truck production.

Production Recovery Contrasts With Weak Sales

The production rebound comes against a weaker sales environment. Ford reported U.S. sales of 170,681 vehicles in August, down 10.3% from the same month a year earlier. The decline represented the company’s eighth consecutive month of year-over-year sales reductions.

F-Series sales, however, showed greater resilience than Ford’s overall business. Sales increased 3.5% in August to more than 67,000 units, although year-to-date F-Series sales remained 8.7% below the comparable period in 2025. Ford’s broader truck category declined only 0.9% during August, while SUV sales dropped 23.3%.

The company is also dealing with substantial weakness in electric vehicles. Ford’s electric vehicle sales fell nearly 80% in August, while F-150 Lightning sales dropped more than 95% from a year earlier. The contrast underscores the continued importance of traditional pickup trucks to Ford’s U.S. sales mix.

Inventory Rebuilding Becomes the Next Test

Ford currently has roughly 40 days of pickup inventory at dealerships, below the level historically considered adequate across the industry. The company aims to increase that figure to between 50 and 60 days as additional trucks reach dealerships.

Ford expects the production increase to become increasingly visible at dealerships over the next 30 to 90 days. That could help the automaker capture sales that were previously constrained by limited truck availability, particularly if demand for pickups remains relatively stable.

The next phase will therefore depend on whether the additional supply generates stronger retail sales without creating excessive inventory. Investors will be watching F-Series deliveries, dealer inventory levels, pricing and incentives, as well as the cost impact from the earlier aluminum disruptions. Ford has estimated that the supplier problems will cost approximately $1.5 billion in 2026, making a successful production recovery important for both operating efficiency and financial performance.
