European markets began September with a cautious tone, as gains in the euro and British pound contrasted with renewed weakness across several major equity benchmarks. The latest market data show investors entering the new month with a mixed appetite for risk, with the FTSE 100 and DAX leading declines while the CAC 40 and Euronext 100 remained marginally positive.

European Equities Start September Under Pressure

The DAX P fell 0.50% to 26,127.17, making it the weakest performer among the major European equity indexes. The decline follows a 0.61% drop on August 31, indicating continued short-term pressure on German equities.

The FTSE 100 also weakened, falling 0.64% to 10,754.83. The decline reverses part of the index’s modest 0.29% gain in the previous session and leaves Britain’s benchmark among the day’s weakest major European markets.

The EURO STOXX 50 I slipped 0.26% to 6,403.23, while the MSCI EUROPE declined 0.25% to 2,869.96. The broader European benchmarks suggest that the cautious tone extends beyond individual national markets.

France and Euronext Provide Relative Stability

France’s CAC 40 offered a notable exception, rising 0.09% to 8,341.63. The gain follows a 0.16% increase on August 31, giving the French benchmark a modest degree of resilience as the new month begins.

The Euronext 100 Index also edged higher, gaining 0.04% to 1,916.01. Although the move was limited, it contrasted with declines across the broader MSCI Europe and EURO STOXX 50 measures.

The mixed performance suggests that investors are not uniformly reducing exposure to European equities. Instead, market positioning appears selective, with some benchmarks maintaining modest gains despite weakness elsewhere.

Euro and Pound Strengthen

Currency markets provided a more constructive signal. The Euro Index advanced 0.30% to 116.17, recovering from its 0.59% decline on August 31. The British Pound Index also gained 0.10% to 135.48 after falling 0.40% in the previous session.

The simultaneous gains in both major European currency indexes point to renewed strength in the region’s currencies despite the softer equity performance. The euro’s move was particularly notable given the sharp decline recorded at the end of August.

Investors Watch the September Direction

The opening session of September leaves European markets without a clear unified direction. Equity weakness in Germany and the U.K. contrasts with small gains in France and the wider Euronext market, while stronger currencies add another layer to the market picture.

Investors will likely watch whether the current divergence develops into a broader trend during the opening sessions of September. For now, the data point to cautious equity positioning alongside renewed support for European currencies.
