Canada’s financial and wealth-management industries are seeing a notable round of senior leadership changes, with major institutions recruiting experienced executives across investment management, artificial intelligence, data, insurance and operations. The appointments provide a snapshot of where financial firms are placing strategic emphasis as competition intensifies and technology becomes increasingly embedded in core business functions.

TD and Scotiabank Strengthen Strategic Capabilities

TD Private Wealth has appointed Steph Condra as vice-president of investment management following nearly two years at Wellington-Altus Financial, where she served as executive vice-president and chief experience officer. Condra brings more than two decades of investment-industry experience, including five years leading BMO Private Wealth’s National Strategy Office and a period establishing the Canadian business of Irish Life Investment Managers.

Her new responsibilities at TD will include practice management, marketing, incentive design and advisor experience, placing her role at the intersection of investment management and the broader advisor platform.

Scotiabank is also adding senior expertise in a strategically important area. Luke Gee is set to join the bank as executive vice-president and chief data and AI officer on October 19, moving from TD, where he currently serves as senior vice-president and chief analytics and AI officer. His new position will involve working with ScotiaTech and Strategy and Operating groups to co-lead the bank’s data and AI transformation.

The appointment illustrates how artificial intelligence and analytics are moving from specialized technology functions toward broader executive responsibilities within financial institutions.

Insurance and Investment Firms Reshape Leadership

Aon Canada has named Brad Lorimer as CEO, effective September 1. Lorimer has spent nearly two decades with Aon and currently serves as executive vice-president overseeing its East and Central regions. His previous experience also includes a vice-president position at Chubb Insurance.

At Northleaf Capital Partners, Michelle Joliat will become chief operating officer on August 31. Her background includes digital and operational transformation roles at BMO Financial Group and RBC, as well as her current position as senior vice-president of product delivery at Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan.

Northleaf is also promoting Nadim Vasanji to chief financial officer and head of corporate development, effective October 1. Current CFO and COO Jeff Lucasson will become vice-chair of finance and operations after holding his existing roles since 2017.

Risk, Planning and Independent Wealth Management Gain Attention

Leadership changes are also occurring in specialized areas of financial services. Mark Snyder has been appointed chief credit risk and data officer at goeasy, bringing more than two decades of experience from Capital One and a recent senior role at President’s Choice Financial. His appointment combines credit-risk expertise with data analysis capabilities, reflecting the growing importance of analytics in lending decisions.

Elsewhere, Aravind Sithamparapillai has launched AMA Wealth after more than six years with Ironwood Wealth Management Group, while Lisa Lansdowne-Higgins has retired from RBC following 14 years in senior positions. Colette Wagner has also been appointed chair of the Pension Investment Association of Canada’s Communiqué Committee.

What the Leadership Changes Signal

The concentration of appointments across AI, data, wealth management, risk and operational transformation suggests that Canadian financial institutions are competing not only for clients and capital, but also for specialized leadership capabilities. The movement of senior executives between major institutions could accelerate the transfer of expertise across the sector, while newly created roles indicate that technology and data strategy are becoming increasingly central to long-term financial-services management.
