Key Points

  • FTSE 100 rose 0.4% to 10,854.32 points, supported by mining stocks as a weaker U.S. dollar strengthened metal prices.
  • Geopolitical uncertainty surrounding expanded U.S. sanctions on Iran weighed on energy shares, with BP falling 2.9% as oil prices eased.

UK equities began the week on firmer footing as gains in mining and consumer stocks helped the FTSE 100 absorb geopolitical and commodity-market uncertainty. The blue-chip index rose 0.4% to 10,854.32 points, while the FTSE 250 remained flat at 24,717.48, reflecting a cautious market ahead of several events capable of influencing global asset prices.

Mining Stocks Benefit From a Softer Dollar

Mining shares provided the clearest support for the FTSE 100, with Rio Tinto gaining 0.3% and Anglo American rising 1.3%. The moves came as the weaker U.S. dollar supported metal prices, providing a favorable backdrop for globally exposed mining companies whose revenues are closely linked to dollar-denominated commodities.

The performance highlights the importance of currency movements for the UK market. A softer dollar can improve the relative appeal of metals while supporting expectations for commodity demand, although the broader outlook remains dependent on global growth and industrial activity. The FTSE 100’s significant exposure to mining and energy companies therefore leaves the index particularly sensitive to movements in commodities and foreign exchange markets.

Iran Sanctions Add Pressure to Energy Shares

Geopolitical developments remained a major source of uncertainty. Investors were awaiting details of new U.S. sanctions targeting Iran’s trade partners, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent scheduled to outline the measures. Washington has said Iran must relinquish control of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important route for global energy supplies.

Oil prices eased ahead of the announcement, weighing on BP, which declined 2.9%. The contrasting performance between energy and mining stocks demonstrates how different commodity exposures are responding to the current environment. For European investors, the sanctions also raise questions about potential disruptions to crude flows, inflation expectations and the broader implications for global trade relations.

Nvidia and Jackson Hole Set the Global Market Tone

Attention is now shifting toward two major events in the United States. Nvidia’s earnings are expected to provide another important test of the artificial-intelligence investment cycle that has helped drive global equity markets toward record levels. Strong results could reinforce confidence in technology valuations, while evidence of slower growth could increase scrutiny of the sector.

Investors are also preparing for Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s first speech at the annual Jackson Hole conference. Markets are seeking greater clarity following the recent increase in bond yields and regarding the direction of U.S. monetary policy. Any indication that policymakers remain concerned about inflation could keep pressure on interest-rate-sensitive assets, while a more accommodative signal could influence equities, currencies and bonds across Europe.

Other UK shares offered additional support, with British American Tobacco, Diageo and Unilever advancing, while Tracsis climbed 4.7% after raising its full-year forecasts. Looking ahead, the FTSE 100’s direction is likely to remain closely tied to commodity prices, developments around Iran and the dollar, while Nvidia’s results and Warsh’s Jackson Hole remarks could determine the broader risk tone. Investors will also be watching whether movements in bond yields begin to alter valuations across European equities and whether geopolitical tensions translate into renewed volatility in energy markets.
