Key Points
- A New Jersey teenager has dismissed claims against Meta, Google and Snap without receiving payment from the companies.
- The case was one of three bellwether trials selected from roughly 3,300 consolidated lawsuits alleging that social media platforms foster addiction and harm young users.
- Two other October test cases remain, leaving potential legal and regulatory implications for the major social media companies.
A New Jersey teenager has withdrawn her social media addiction lawsuit against Meta Platforms, Google and Snap, removing one of three closely watched bellwether cases scheduled for October in California. The dismissal does not involve a financial payment, but the development comes as major technology companies face thousands of claims alleging that their platforms were designed to encourage excessive use among young people.
One of Three October Bellwether Cases Is Removed
The plaintiff, identified in court documents as P.M-Y., had accused Meta, Google and Snap of contributing to social media addiction and related harm. Her lawyer said the case was initiated with the objective of holding the companies accountable and encouraging changes to protect young users, but the teenager ultimately chose to dismiss the remaining claims and move forward with her life. The claims against TikTok had already been resolved separately.
The case was significant because it was selected as one of three bellwether trials from approximately 3,300 lawsuits consolidated before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Carolyn Kuhl. Bellwether cases are intended to provide an early indication of how juries may evaluate similar allegations and can influence litigation strategy, potential damages assessments and settlement discussions across a much larger group of cases.
Legal Exposure Remains Despite the Dismissal
The withdrawal therefore does not eliminate the broader litigation risk facing the technology companies. Another teen plaintiff, identified as R.K.C., also dismissed claims against Meta shortly before a July trial after resolving claims involving other defendants. Those developments have reduced the number of individual cases reaching trial, but they have not removed the underlying legal questions surrounding platform design and youth safety.
Importantly, the first bellwether trial produced a different outcome. A Los Angeles jury awarded approximately $6 million in damages to a young woman who alleged that Instagram and YouTube contributed to mental health problems, finding Meta and Google liable in that case. TikTok and Snap had settled before the trial. The contrasting outcomes demonstrate why the remaining test cases could carry considerable importance for both sides.
October Trials Could Still Shape the Industry
Two other teen cases remain scheduled for October, according to reporting on the consolidated California litigation. The plaintiffs are minors who have alleged that social media use contributed to addiction and various mental health problems. The companies have disputed the allegations and have maintained that they take measures to protect younger users.
The litigation comes alongside a separate and broader legal challenge involving Meta, in which 29 U.S. states are pursuing claims related to the company’s treatment of children and alleged addictive platform design. That case is currently being heard in Northern California, adding another layer of legal scrutiny to Meta’s approach to youth safety.
For investors and the technology sector, the next developments will center on whether the remaining October cases proceed to trial and what evidence and jury decisions emerge. Any additional liability findings could influence legal costs, product-design practices, youth-safety policies and regulatory pressure across the social media industry, while further dismissals or settlements could reduce the number of cases reaching juries without resolving the wider debate over platform responsibility.
