DeepSeek Extends V4-Flash Into Multimodal AI

The new DeepSeek-V4-Flash-Vision-Exp is designed to analyze images, screenshots and other visual inputs while retaining the text reasoning and agent capabilities of the underlying V4-Flash model. DeepSeek has made the experimental system available through its API, giving developers an avenue to incorporate visual understanding into AI agents and software applications.

The significance extends beyond image recognition. Multimodal agents can interpret information presented visually and use that information as part of broader reasoning or tool-use workflows. Early Benchmarks Put the Model Close to Opus 4.8

DeepSeek’s initial benchmark results suggest that the new model is competitive with Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 on selected multimodal agent evaluations. Across four tests, V4-Flash-Vision-Exp scored 27.3 versus 25.7 for Opus 4.8 on Agents’ Last Exam and 35.0 versus 34.0 on ZeroBench. Anthropic’s model remained ahead on ApexBench, with 39.4 versus 36.5, and Chartography, with 65.0 versus 64.3. The result was therefore two benchmark wins apiece, rather than an outright performance lead.

The comparison also highlights the impact of adding visual capabilities. On ApexBench, the score increased from 26.2 for the text-oriented V4-Flash-0731 to 36.5 for the vision-enabled version, while Agents’ Last Exam improved from 25.2 to 27.3. Because those evaluations include multimodal inputs that the text-only model cannot directly process, the gains primarily demonstrate the value of adding vision rather than a sudden improvement in underlying text reasoning.
