Micron Technology is committing $10 billion over the next decade to establish Micron Research Labs, a new U.S.-based research hub designed to pursue long-horizon advances in memory and computing technology. Micron Builds a Long-Horizon Research Platform
Micron Research Labs will be headquartered in Boise, where Micron already operates a major memory research and development center. The new institution is intended to look beyond conventional product-development cycles, with research extending beyond the next decade and partnerships spanning academia, government, startups and the broader semiconductor industry.
The company expects to break ground on a dedicated facility in 2027, with the site designed to accommodate hundreds of researchers. Micron also plans university collaborations, satellite laboratories and ecosystem partnerships, creating a broader research network connected to its existing technology footprint across the United States and international markets.
Strategically, the initiative gives Micron a dedicated platform for research that may not produce immediate commercial products but could influence future generations of memory, compute and manufacturing technologies.
AI Demand Raises the Strategic Value of Memory
The investment comes as memory becomes increasingly important to the economics and performance of AI infrastructure. Micron identifies advanced memory and compute architectures, packaging and future semiconductor manufacturing among the core research areas for the new lab, reflecting the increasingly close relationship between memory technology and AI system performance.
Micron’s existing strategy already places high-bandwidth memory at the center of its AI-related expansion. In 2025, the company announced plans for approximately $200 billion in U.S. manufacturing and R&D investment, including advanced HBM packaging capabilities and additional leading-edge memory manufacturing capacity.
In July 2026, Micron increased its planned U.S. investment to more than $250 billion through 2035, citing surging demand for memory in the AI era. The company said the spending is intended to support its long-term objective of producing 40% of its DRAM in the United States.
Research Investment Strengthens U.S. Semiconductor Strategy
Micron’s research expansion also has implications beyond the company’s individual technology roadmap. The U.S. semiconductor industry has increasingly emphasized domestic manufacturing, supply-chain resilience and technological leadership, particularly in strategically important components such as advanced memory.
Micron’s Boise strategy is designed to connect research more closely with manufacturing. Its existing Boise manufacturing expansion is being developed alongside its R&D operations, with meaningful DRAM output from the leading-edge facility projected for 2027. The company has also expanded its manufacturing footprint in New York, Virginia and other locations as part of its broader U.S. strategy.

Micron is attempting to secure a deeper position across the semiconductor innovation chain, from foundational research through advanced memory development, packaging and eventual manufacturing.
