Google Makes $10 Million Bet on Airline Data

Google is reportedly paying $10 million to acquire a portion of Spirit Airlines’ business data as artificial intelligence companies increasingly seek specialized datasets to improve their AI models.

The transaction includes a broad collection of Spirit’s internal information, including emails, spreadsheets, booking records, frequent-flyer information and employee human resources data, according to reports.

Reuters reported that the dataset also includes Microsoft Teams messages and calendars, along with marketing, productivity and operational records.

A Google spokesperson confirmed that the company acquired part of an enterprise dataset from Spirit that could be useful for improving its products and AI models. Google said it will not receive personal information through the purchase.

Spirit’s Bankruptcy Creates a New Data Opportunity

The transaction comes as Spirit Airlines continues to wind down its operations following its bankruptcy.

The airline halted operations in May and has been selling its remaining assets as part of the bankruptcy process. The sale of its enterprise data demonstrates how corporate information can become an asset with meaningful value even after a company has ceased normal operations.

The transaction is not yet final. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane is scheduled to consider the proposed sale at a hearing Wednesday.

Google also faced competition for the dataset. AI data company Mercor reportedly submitted a $7.5 million bid, indicating that multiple companies see potential value in Spirit’s historical business information.

Why Enterprise Data Matters for AI

The Spirit transaction reflects a broader shift in the AI industry. While much of the focus has centered on computing power and advanced chips, high-quality data has become another increasingly important resource.

Enterprise datasets can contain detailed information about how businesses operate, communicate, serve customers and manage complex processes. Specialized data can potentially help AI systems become more capable in specific business environments.

For Google, an airline dataset could provide exposure to real-world operational information across areas such as bookings, marketing, workforce management and customer activity.

The value of such information ultimately depends on how effectively it can be anonymized, processed and incorporated into AI development.

AI Companies Increasingly Pay for Data Access

Google’s acquisition is part of a broader trend in which major AI companies are paying for access to large collections of content and data.

In February 2024, Reddit reached a reported agreement with Google providing access to nearly two decades of user-generated content in a deal reportedly worth approximately $60 million annually.

OpenAI subsequently reached its own agreement with Reddit to incorporate Reddit content into ChatGPT.

More recently, the Wikimedia Foundation announced agreements with companies including Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta to provide large-scale access to Wikipedia content.

These transactions demonstrate how valuable established data repositories can become as AI developers look beyond traditional publicly available datasets.

Privacy and Bankruptcy Questions Remain

The Spirit transaction also raises important questions about how corporate data should be handled when companies enter bankruptcy.

Google has indicated that personal information will not be included in the dataset it receives. Reports also indicate that identifying details will be removed before the information is transferred.

Nevertheless, the breadth of the proposed dataset—including internal communications, calendars, bookings and employee-related information—makes the court’s review an important part of the process.

The outcome could provide another example of how courts and companies approach the sale of data as an asset during corporate restructuring.

Market Outlook

Google’s reported $10 million purchase of Spirit Airlines’ enterprise data underscores the growing economic value of proprietary information in the AI industry. As model developers compete to improve performance, access to specialized real-world datasets could become an increasingly important component of AI investment strategies.

For Google, the transaction represents a relatively small financial commitment compared with the company’s broader AI spending, but the strategic value could be greater if the data helps improve products and models.

More broadly, the Spirit deal could encourage other companies undergoing restructuring to view historical business data as a potentially valuable asset. As AI development continues, the market for specialized datasets is likely to become an increasingly important part of the technology industry’s infrastructure.
