Asian markets closed mostly higher on August 17, 2026, as investors returned to equities across Northeast Asia and Greater China. South Korea led the advance, while mainland China and Hong Kong also posted strong gains. Japan added to the positive momentum, although India and Australia finished lower.

The session marked a constructive start to the week, with several major benchmarks moving closer to important technical levels following recent volatility.

South Korea Approaches 7,000

South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index climbed 2.42% to 6,977.94, recording the strongest gain among the region’s major equity benchmarks.

The advance brought the index within striking distance of the psychologically important 7,000 level. The move represents a continued recovery following the sharp volatility that affected Korean equities throughout July and early August.

Technology and semiconductor stocks remain important drivers of the KOSPI, and continued strength in these sectors could determine whether the index is able to sustain its recovery.

China Moves Closer to 4,000

China’s SSE Composite Index gained 1.41% to 3,982.65, moving within reach of the important 4,000 threshold.

The advance reinforces the gradual improvement in mainland Chinese equities after a prolonged period of weakness. A sustained move above 4,000 could provide an important psychological boost to investor sentiment and potentially strengthen confidence across other China-linked markets.

The latest gain also marked one of the strongest performances among Asia’s major benchmarks during Monday’s session.

Hong Kong and Japan Extend Gains

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index advanced 1.34% to 25,453.23, extending its position above the 25,000 level.

The gain indicates continued investor interest in Hong Kong-listed companies and supports the broader improvement in sentiment toward Chinese-linked equities.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 also moved higher, gaining 0.74% to 69,220.25. The benchmark returned above 69,000 as investors continued to favor Japanese equities following recent market volatility.

India and Australia Lag Behind

India’s S&P BSE Sensex declined 0.36% to 77,728.16, giving back part of its recent gains.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 also fell 0.46% to 9,073.20, continuing its recent weakness after previously trading above the 9,200 level.

The declines in both markets limited the breadth of Monday’s regional advance, highlighting the continued divergence in investor positioning across Asia.

Currency Markets Strengthen Modestly

Currency markets posted modest gains.

The Australian Dollar Index rose 0.40% to 70.85, while the Japanese Yen Index edged higher by 0.11% to 62.77.

The relatively limited movements suggest currency markets remained stable as investors focused primarily on equity markets and the continued recovery across Northeast Asia.

Outlook

Looking ahead, investors will closely monitor whether South Korea can break above 7,000 and whether mainland China’s SSE Composite Index can sustain a move through 4,000.

Hong Kong’s ability to maintain its position above 25,000 and Japan’s progress toward 70,000 will also remain important indicators of regional momentum. At the same time, investors will watch whether India and Australia can stabilize following their latest declines.

For now, Asia begins the week with improving momentum, led by South Korea, China, and Hong Kong. The ability of these markets to hold their recent gains could determine whether the region’s recovery develops into a broader and more sustained advance.
