Key Points

  • Cisco has increased its AI hyperscaler order target to $9 billion, reinforcing the company’s growing exposure to the AI infrastructure investment cycle.
  • Record revenue, accelerating data-center and campus networking orders, and strong cash generation provide a solid financial foundation despite slower growth in security and observability.
  • The key market signal will come from fiscal 2027 guidance, with a sustained AI demand outlook potentially supporting a break above $124.62, while weaker expectations could send the stock back toward $119.65 support.

Cisco Systems enters its fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 results with investors focused on whether its expanding role in AI infrastructure can translate into another leg higher for the stock. The company has raised its expected full-year AI hyperscaler orders from $5 billion to $9 billion, while third-quarter revenue reached a record $15.8 billion. Yet shares remain constrained below $124.62 resistance, leaving the earnings report and fiscal 2027 outlook critical for determining whether strong AI demand represents a durable growth cycle or a temporary networking upgrade wave.

AI Orders Strengthen Cisco’s Growth Narrative

Cisco’s decision to raise its AI hyperscaler order target is one of the clearest signals that AI infrastructure spending is extending beyond processors and accelerators into networking equipment. The company had initially targeted $5 billion in fiscal 2026 AI orders before increasing that figure to $9 billion, with $5.3 billion already booked by the end of the third quarter. These orders provide an important pipeline as hyperscalers expand facilities and deploy increasingly complex AI systems.

The opportunity is tied to the enormous networking requirements of AI clusters. Thousands of accelerators must communicate with one another and with storage and remote infrastructure, creating demand for switching, routing, optical connectivity and related technologies. Cisco can therefore benefit from AI spending even when customers use custom accelerators rather than relying exclusively on Nvidia hardware.

Data Center and Campus Demand Broaden the Opportunity

Cisco’s growth is not limited to hyperscale customers. Third-quarter data-center switching orders increased 40%, while overall networking product orders rose 50%. Campus networking orders also climbed more than 25% year over year, reflecting a broader refresh cycle after years of restrained enterprise hardware spending.

That combination gives Cisco two distinct sources of demand: hyperscalers are building AI infrastructure while enterprises are upgrading aging networking systems to support more advanced connectivity, security and AI applications. However, the company’s portfolio remains uneven. Observability revenue increased only 3% in the third quarter, while security revenue was essentially flat. Sustained AI momentum will therefore need to compensate for weaker performance in these businesses or eventually be complemented by a recovery in software and security growth.

Fiscal 2027 Guidance Becomes the Bigger Test

Cisco entered the quarter targeting revenue of $16.7 billion to $16.9 billion, adjusted earnings per share of $1.16 to $1.18, adjusted gross margins of 65.5% to 66.5%, and adjusted operating margins of 34% to 35%. Its full-year revenue target was $62.8 billion to $63.0 billion, with adjusted EPS of $4.27 to $4.29.

The company also demonstrated substantial financial strength, producing $3.8 billion of operating cash flow in the third quarter and holding $16.6 billion in cash at the end of April. Remaining performance obligations reached $43.5 billion, providing additional visibility into future revenue.

Market Outlook

The immediate market test is technical as well as fundamental. Cisco shares have been consolidating between approximately $119.65 support and $124.62 resistance, while the 50-day and 100-day exponential moving averages remain below the stock. A decisive move above $124.62 could open a path toward $129.75 if earnings and fiscal 2027 guidance reinforce expectations for sustained AI and campus-networking demand. Conversely, disappointing guidance or signs that hyperscaler orders are normalizing could push shares toward $119.65 and potentially the $117.30 area.

The more important question for longer-term investors is whether Cisco is entering a multi-year AI networking cycle. Strong margins, cash generation and capital returns give the company financial flexibility, but investors will need evidence that AI orders can continue beyond the current infrastructure buildout. Management’s comments on fiscal 2027 demand, margins and security performance may ultimately matter more than the headline quarterly numbers.
