Key Points
- Riot Platforms has signed a 20-year compute agreement with Anthropic covering 191 megawatts at its Rockdale, Texas campus, with the initial contract expected to generate $9.1 billion in revenue.
- The agreement, combined with Riot's existing AMD relationship, could give the campus approximately $9.8 billion in contracted data center revenue.
- The deal also reinforces a broader industry shift in which bitcoin miners are increasingly valued for their electricity and data center infrastructure as AI demand makes large-scale power capacity increasingly scarce.
Riot Platforms (NASDAQ: RIOT) is accelerating its transition beyond bitcoin mining after securing a long-term compute agreement with Anthropic that could generate $9.1 billion in revenue over 20 years. The deal highlights a broader transformation across the cryptocurrency mining industry, where scarce electricity capacity, grid connections and data center infrastructure are increasingly becoming valuable assets for the artificial intelligence economy. For Riot, the agreement could fundamentally change how investors assess the company’s business model and long-term earnings potential.
Anthropic Deal Creates a Long-Term Revenue Base
The agreement will lease 191 megawatts of capacity at Riot’s Rockdale, Texas campus to Anthropic, giving the AI company access to grid-connected power at a time when electricity and data center capacity are becoming critical constraints on AI expansion.
Riot expects the agreement to generate approximately $9.1 billion in revenue over its 20-year initial term. If the contract is extended through two additional five-year periods, the potential revenue could rise to approximately $16.1 billion. The scale of the agreement represents a significant shift from Riot’s traditional dependence on bitcoin mining economics.
The company already has an agreement with Advanced Micro Devices, meaning Riot’s Rockdale campus could become a two-tenant data center operation with approximately $9.8 billion in contracted revenue, according to Compass Point analyst Michael Donovan. That contracted revenue provides greater visibility than the highly volatile cash flows associated with cryptocurrency mining.
Bitcoin Miners Are Repositioning Around AI
Riot’s strategy reflects a broader change across the publicly traded bitcoin-mining sector. Mining companies were traditionally valued primarily according to their exposure to bitcoin prices, production costs and mining efficiency. However, the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure has created another potential source of value: access to large amounts of electricity and existing data center infrastructure.
The shift has become particularly important as bitcoin miners face structural pressure from lower mining incentives, intense competition and the impact of the Bitcoin halving cycle. When bitcoin prices fall below the economic cost of production, miners can see profitability deteriorate rapidly.
AI infrastructure offers a different economic model. Instead of relying exclusively on cryptocurrency prices, companies can monetize power capacity through long-term agreements with technology firms. That allows investors to gain exposure to AI infrastructure demand without having to predict which AI model or application will ultimately dominate.
Market Outlook
Riot’s agreement with Anthropic could mark an important turning point in the company’s investment narrative, particularly if it can continue converting its power portfolio into contracted data center revenue. The initial market reaction, with shares jumping more than 20% before giving back most of the gain, suggests investors recognize the strategic significance but remain cautious about how much of the opportunity is already reflected in the stock.
The biggest potential advantage is the scarcity of approved power capacity. ERCOT’s increasing scrutiny of new power projects could slow competing developments and make existing grid-connected facilities more valuable. If AI companies continue seeking large blocks of near-term power, Riot’s infrastructure could become an increasingly strategic asset. Investors will therefore be watching additional tenant agreements, construction timelines, capital requirements and the company’s ability to balance its remaining bitcoin-mining operations with its emerging AI infrastructure business.
