Key Points
- Super Micro Computer has already disclosed preliminary fourth-quarter revenue of roughly $11 billion, gross margin of 15% to 17%, and more than $60 billion in new orders.
- The biggest unanswered question is the company's fiscal 2027 outlook, which will show whether its record order backlog can translate into sustained revenue growth.
- Margin durability, working-capital needs and the company's ongoing review of transactions related to alleged export-control issues remain important risks for investors.
Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ: SMCI) has removed much of the suspense surrounding its fiscal fourth-quarter results.
The AI server maker issued a preliminary update on July 21, saying revenue for the quarter ended June 30 would come in near the low end of its previous $11 billion to $12.5 billion guidance.
The company also projected gross margin of 15% to 17% and disclosed that it received more than $60 billion of new orders during the quarter.
Those figures provide a strong snapshot of the company’s fiscal 2026 performance. But one major piece remains missing: the outlook for fiscal 2027.
That guidance could become the most important number when Super Micro reports its complete results on Tuesday at 5 p.m. ET.
Revenue and Orders Point to Strong AI Demand
Fourth-quarter revenue near $11 billion would represent almost double the $5.8 billion Super Micro generated during the same quarter a year earlier.
It would also put full-year fiscal 2026 revenue near the lower end of management’s previous $38.9 billion to $40.4 billion guidance, compared with $22 billion in fiscal 2025.
Even more striking is the order figure.
Super Micro said it booked more than $60 billion of new orders during the quarter. That compares with approximately $39 billion of revenue expected for the entire fiscal year.
The figures highlight the scale of demand for AI infrastructure and high-performance computing systems.
However, orders do not automatically become revenue. The company noted that some of the reported orders may not represent firm commitments and could be subject to cancellations or delays.
That makes the fiscal 2027 outlook particularly important.
The Margin Number Could Matter Even More
Super Micro’s preliminary gross-margin range of 15% to 17% is arguably the most surprising part of the update.
The company had previously guided for a fourth-quarter gross margin of only 8.2% to 8.4%. The preliminary figure therefore represents a dramatic improvement.
Management attributed the stronger result primarily to customer and product mix.
The concern for investors is whether that improvement can continue.
Super Micro’s gross margin has fluctuated significantly over the past year, moving from 9.5% in the year-ago quarter to 6.3% in fiscal Q2 and 9.9% in fiscal Q3.
If fiscal 2027 guidance assumes margins remain near the mid-teens, investors could view the fourth-quarter improvement as evidence of a structural improvement in the company’s economics.
If margins fall back toward historical levels, the latest improvement could instead prove to have been largely mix-driven.
The Balance Sheet Remains a Concern
Super Micro’s rapid expansion also requires significant working capital.
During fiscal third quarter, the company used $6.6 billion of cash in operations and ended the period with approximately $1.3 billion in cash against $8.8 billion of bank debt and convertible notes.
That creates an important consideration as the company works through its record order pipeline.
AI servers must generally be built and shipped before customers pay, meaning rapid revenue growth can require substantial additional capital.
If Super Micro converts a meaningful portion of its $60 billion-plus order book into shipments, the company could require considerable working capital to support that growth.
Regulatory Review Adds Another Layer of Risk
Investors also have to account for an independent review being conducted by Super Micro’s board involving certain transactions connected to alleged export-control issues.
The company has indicated that the outcome of the review could affect its forecasts, including the preliminary results already disclosed.
That creates an additional source of uncertainty as investors evaluate the company’s valuation and future growth potential.
Why Fiscal 2027 Guidance Matters
Super Micro shares are trading in the low $30s, roughly 45% below their 52-week high, with the stock valued at about nine times expected earnings for the coming year.
At first glance, that valuation appears inexpensive for a company benefiting from rapidly expanding AI infrastructure demand.
But the low multiple also reflects investor uncertainty over whether the company’s growth, margins and cash generation can keep pace with its enormous order pipeline.
The fiscal 2027 revenue outlook will therefore be critical. A forecast showing strong conversion of the backlog could strengthen the bullish case for the stock.
However, investors should pay just as much attention to gross-margin assumptions and cash requirements.
What to Watch Next
Super Micro enters its earnings report with three major numbers already on the table: approximately $11 billion in quarterly revenue, 15% to 17% gross margins and more than $60 billion in new orders.
The missing piece is what comes next.
Fiscal 2027 guidance will reveal how management expects those orders to translate into revenue, while margin guidance should indicate whether the fourth-quarter improvement represents a lasting change or a temporary benefit from product mix.
For investors, the combination of AI demand, record orders and a relatively low forward valuation creates significant upside potential, but working-capital requirements, margin volatility and regulatory uncertainty remain important risks. The upcoming outlook could determine whether Super Micro’s recent weakness represents an opportunity or a warning.
