Key Points

  • The AI infrastructure investment boom is strengthening commercial loan demand, creating opportunities for regional and large banks beyond direct data center financing.
  • KRE and KBE are hovering near 52-week highs and have outperformed the broader market in 2026, gaining about 16.8% and 14.4%, respectively.
  • Rising borrowing by manufacturers, equipment suppliers and other businesses, combined with potentially easier monetary policy, could provide additional support for bank earnings.

AI Boom Creates Opportunities Beyond Technology

The artificial intelligence investment boom is creating a broader growth opportunity for U.S. banks as companies across the economy increase borrowing to support the massive infrastructure buildout.

Regional and large banks can benefit not only from financing data centers directly but also from lending to manufacturers, equipment suppliers and other businesses that are expanding production to meet rising AI-related demand.

The trend is already reflected in bank-focused ETFs.

The State Street SPDR S&P Regional Banking ETF (KRE) and State Street SPDR S&P Bank ETF (KBE) are both trading near 52-week highs. KRE has gained about 16.8% year to date, while KBE has risen approximately 14.4%.

Both have outperformed the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), which is up about 13.2% over the same period.

Commercial Loan Demand Is Strengthening

One of the clearest potential benefits for banks is improving commercial loan demand.

According to the Federal Reserve’s Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey, a net 16.1% of banks reported stronger demand for loans from large and midsize companies during the second quarter.

That was a substantial improvement from 4.8% in the previous quarter.

The increase was driven in part by greater investment in plants, equipment and inventories, suggesting that businesses are borrowing to expand their operations.

For banks, stronger commercial lending can create an additional source of growth as the AI investment cycle spreads throughout the broader economy.

AI Spending Has a Trickle-Down Effect

The benefits of AI infrastructure spending extend well beyond semiconductor and technology companies.

Wells Fargo analysts have described the trend as a “trickle-down effect,” with increased AI investment supporting demand for electrical equipment, power, natural gas, construction materials and other industrial products.

Those industries may require additional financing as companies expand production capacity, purchase equipment and build new facilities.

U.S. manufacturing activity has also strengthened. The July ISM manufacturing index reached a four-year high and marked the seventh consecutive month of expansion, with the AI infrastructure buildout contributing to the improvement.

This creates a potentially favorable environment for banks because stronger industrial activity can translate into additional commercial borrowing.

Big Tech Is Increasing Its Use of Debt Markets

The scale of AI investment is also evident in the growing role of debt and equity financing among major technology companies.

Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta are expected to spend more than $730 billion on capital expenditures this year, according to the figures cited in the source.

Several companies are turning to debt markets to help finance that spending.

Amazon plans to raise at least $25 billion through U.S. bonds, while Nvidia announced a $25 billion bond offering. Oracle expects to raise between $45 billion and $50 billion through debt and stock in 2026.

Alphabet plans to raise between $20 billion and $25 billion through a bond offering, while Meta has filed for a bond offering of up to $30 billion.

Nvidia has also partnered with major financial firms including Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR to mobilize more than $500 billion in third-party capital for AI compute infrastructure.

The expanding financing requirements surrounding AI infrastructure could create additional opportunities for banks and financial institutions participating in the lending and capital markets ecosystem.

Could Lower Rates Add Another Tailwind?

The banking outlook could also benefit from changes in the interest-rate environment.

The weak July jobs report has increased expectations that the Federal Reserve could maintain a more accommodative stance, potentially improving financial conditions for businesses.

A more favorable rate environment could support borrowing activity while also helping reduce some of the pressure that higher rates have placed on interest-sensitive sectors.

For banks, however, the effect of lower rates can vary depending on deposit costs, loan growth and net interest margins.

Bank ETFs to Watch

The AI boom is increasingly becoming an economy-wide investment cycle rather than a story limited to chipmakers, cloud providers and data center operators.

As manufacturers expand capacity and businesses invest in equipment, energy and infrastructure, commercial borrowing could continue to strengthen.

That creates a potential second-order benefit for regional and large banks.

Against this backdrop, investors looking for exposure to the banking sector can consider ETFs such as the iShares U.S. Regional Banks ETF (IAT) and First Trust Nasdaq Bank ETF (FTXO), alongside KRE and KBE.

The key question is whether the AI investment cycle can continue generating enough economic activity and commercial borrowing to sustain the recent strength in bank stocks.
