Asian markets closed mixed on August 7, 2026, as investors selectively returned to mainland Chinese and Hong Kong equities while maintaining a cautious stance toward Northeast Asian and broader regional markets. China’s strong performance helped lift sentiment, but declines in South Korea, India, Japan, and Australia prevented a broader regional rally.

The session reflected continued divergence across Asia, with investors favoring selected opportunities while remaining cautious about technology-heavy markets.

China Leads Regional Gains

China’s SSE Composite Index climbed 1.02% to 3,940.04, delivering the strongest performance among Asia’s major equity benchmarks.

The gain brought the benchmark closer to the important 4,000 level and extended its recovery after several weeks of uneven trading. Investor confidence improved as buying broadened across mainland equities, suggesting sentiment toward Chinese stocks continues to stabilize.

Although the index remains below the key psychological threshold, Friday’s advance represents another encouraging step in China’s recovery.

Hong Kong Builds on Positive Momentum

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 0.54% to 25,668.03, extending its position above the 25,000 mark.

The advance reflected continued buying in financial, technology, and consumer-related companies, reinforcing Hong Kong’s recent resilience relative to mainland markets. The benchmark has maintained steady momentum despite periodic volatility across the broader Asian region.

The latest gain supports the view that investor confidence in Hong Kong-listed equities remains constructive.

South Korea Continues to Struggle

South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index declined 0.60% to 6,258.77, extending its recent period of weakness.

Technology and semiconductor shares continued to weigh on the benchmark, leaving the KOSPI well below levels recorded earlier this year. Although the decline was considerably smaller than previous sessions, investor sentiment toward Korean equities remains fragile following weeks of heightened volatility.

South Korea continues to be one of Asia’s most volatile major equity markets.

Japan, India and Australia Edge Lower

Japan’s Nikkei 225 slipped 0.12% to 65,606.71, remaining relatively stable despite continued cautious trading in export-oriented and technology stocks.

India’s S&P BSE Sensex fell 0.42% to 78,620.46, giving back a portion of its recent gains while continuing to trade near record territory.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 eased 0.09% to 9,263.60, reflecting a largely balanced session with only modest weakness across major sectors.

The limited declines suggest investors remained cautious but avoided broad-based selling outside South Korea.

Currency Markets Ease Lower

Currency markets weakened modestly during the session.

The Australian Dollar Index declined 0.37% to 70.32, while the Japanese Yen Index fell 0.45% to 63.12.

The relatively small currency movements contrasted with the mixed equity performance, indicating that foreign exchange markets remained comparatively stable.

Outlook

Looking ahead, investors will watch whether mainland China can reclaim the 4,000 level and whether Hong Kong can continue strengthening above 25,500.

Attention will also remain focused on South Korea’s efforts to stabilize after an extended period of volatility, while Japan, India, and Australia seek to regain upward momentum. Investor sentiment toward technology and semiconductor stocks is expected to remain a key driver of regional market direction in the weeks ahead.

For now, Asia concludes the week with mixed performance, as renewed strength in mainland China and Hong Kong offsets continued weakness in South Korea and modest declines across several other regional markets.
