Key Points

  • SpaceX reported second-quarter revenue growth of 92% and returned to profitability, beating Wall Street expectations on both revenue and earnings.
  • Investors reacted negatively to soaring capital expenditures, negative free cash flow, and upcoming insider share lock-up expirations, sending the stock below its IPO price.
  • While Starlink and AI businesses continue to expand rapidly, questions remain about the sustainability of SpaceX's long-term spending plans and valuation.

Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX) delivered a strong second-quarter earnings report, posting better-than-expected revenue and earnings as its Starlink satellite internet business and artificial intelligence operations continued to expand. Despite the impressive financial performance, investors focused on the company’s aggressive capital spending plans and upcoming insider lock-up expirations, driving shares lower following the report.

The stock, which made its public market debut in June, has fallen below its initial public offering price as investors weigh SpaceX’s long-term growth ambitions against the significant investment required to achieve them.

Revenue Surges as Starlink Drives Growth

SpaceX reported second-quarter revenue of $7.81 billion, representing a 92% year-over-year increase and comfortably exceeding analyst expectations of $6.93 billion.

The company generated net income of $541 million, or $0.09 per share, a significant improvement from a loss of approximately $1 billion during the same period last year. Analysts had expected a quarterly loss of $0.26 per share.

Starlink remained the company’s strongest operating segment during the quarter. Revenue from its Connectivity business increased 66%, while operating income climbed 79% as subscriber growth continued to accelerate. The satellite internet service doubled its subscriber base from a year earlier and expanded 17% sequentially.

Management also outlined plans to enter the U.S. wireless market as early as next year using spectrum acquired from EchoStar. However, investors remain cautious about the strategy due to limited spectrum holdings and the technical challenges associated with satellite-based mobile connectivity, particularly in densely populated urban environments.

AI Expansion Comes With Massive Spending

Artificial intelligence emerged as another major contributor to growth during the quarter.

Revenue from SpaceX’s AI operations increased from $737 million a year earlier to $2.56 billion, while operating losses narrowed to $1.26 billion.

However, investors were more focused on the company’s extraordinary capital spending. AI-related capital expenditures surged from $749 million in the prior-year quarter to $15.8 billion.

Management said the AI infrastructure investments are currently generating payback periods of less than one year, supported by high-priced cloud computing contracts. Even so, questions remain about whether those attractive economics can be maintained as competition intensifies and pricing normalizes.

The company also confirmed it will exclusively deploy Nvidia hardware for its AI computing infrastructure going forward.

Space Business Continues Investing for Long-Term Growth

SpaceX’s launch services business also delivered revenue growth, with sales rising 29% to $962 million.

Despite higher revenue, operating losses widened as the company continued investing heavily in Starship development and future launch capabilities.

Following the latest successful Starship test flight, CEO Elon Musk said the company intends to significantly accelerate launch frequency over the next year, potentially reaching multiple launches per day pending regulatory approvals.

SpaceX also announced plans to collaborate with Nvidia on a new AI satellite initiative known as Starmind AI1, aimed at expanding computing capabilities in orbit.

Cash Burn Remains a Key Concern

The company’s ambitious expansion strategy continues to require enormous amounts of capital.

During the first six months of the year, SpaceX generated $3.5 billion in operating cash flow but recorded approximately negative $25 billion in free cash flow after investing $28.5 billion in capital expenditures.

The company ended the quarter with approximately $100 billion in cash, strengthened by $85.7 billion in net proceeds from its recent IPO.

Looking ahead, management expects annual recurring revenue to reach $100 billion by year-end, including contributions from its acquisition of AI coding platform Cursor. SpaceX also expects an additional $6.7 billion in cloud services revenue to begin ramping during the fourth quarter.

Valuation and Investor Outlook

Despite the strong operating performance, investors remain cautious about SpaceX’s premium valuation and long-term funding requirements.

The company currently trades at nearly 40 times forward sales, while its expansion into AI infrastructure, satellite communications, wireless services, and space exploration will likely require years of elevated capital spending.

Adding to the near-term uncertainty, insider share lock-up expirations scheduled throughout the year could increase the supply of shares entering the market, potentially creating additional pressure on the stock price.

Closing Insights

SpaceX delivered one of the strongest quarterly growth performances among newly public technology companies, fueled by rapid expansion in Starlink and artificial intelligence. However, the company’s massive capital investment program, negative free cash flow, premium valuation, and upcoming insider share sales have shifted investor attention from revenue growth to execution risk. While SpaceX remains positioned at the intersection of AI, satellite communications, and space technology, the market appears focused on whether its long-term ambitions can generate sustainable shareholder returns.
