Key Points

  • Nokia is transforming its networking business by integrating artificial intelligence into next-generation radio access network (AI-RAN) technology, laying the foundation for the transition to 6G.
  • Nvidia and Dell Technologies are key partners, supplying AI accelerators and server infrastructure that power Nokia's commercial AI-RAN platform.
  • Growing AI-driven mobile data traffic and future 6G deployments could create a multibillion-dollar market opportunity for Nokia and its ecosystem partners.

Nokia is no longer the mobile phone company many investors remember from the early days of cellular technology. Instead, the Finnish technology company has evolved into a global provider of networking infrastructure, supplying telecommunications equipment, cloud networking solutions, and enterprise connectivity systems used by wireless carriers, data centers, and industrial customers worldwide.

As artificial intelligence accelerates demand for high-speed connectivity, Nokia’s networking business is emerging as a major beneficiary of the next evolution in wireless infrastructure.

AI Is Driving the Next Generation of Mobile Networks

The rapid adoption of generative AI applications is dramatically increasing the amount of data flowing across wireless networks. According to industry research from Aetha Consulting, generative AI workloads generate more than twice the uplink traffic of traditional mobile applications, placing growing pressure on existing 5G infrastructure.

Industry forecasts suggest mobile networks could eventually face data loads up to ten times greater than current levels as AI-powered services become more widespread across consumers, enterprises, and industrial applications.

Recognizing this shift, Nokia began developing AI-native radio access network (AI-RAN) technology designed to improve network efficiency through artificial intelligence rather than relying solely on traditional hardware upgrades.

Last month, the company announced the commercial launch of what it describes as the industry’s first AI-RAN platform.

The platform delivers approximately 20% greater spectral efficiency than current systems, with Nokia targeting improvements of roughly 50% next year and ultimately doubling spectral efficiency by 2028. The technology is expected to serve as the foundation for commercial 6G deployments later this decade.

Nvidia and Dell Strengthen Nokia’s AI Ecosystem

Nokia’s AI networking strategy is supported by two major technology partners.

Nvidia supplies the AI acceleration hardware through its Aerial RAN Computer Pro (ARC-Pro), a platform designed specifically for AI-powered telecommunications networks. The system combines AI computing, networking, and radio technologies while remaining compatible with existing 5G infrastructure and future 6G upgrades.

Dell Technologies provides the underlying server infrastructure through its PowerEdge platform, supplying the computing framework needed to operate AI-RAN deployments at scale.

The partnership expands Nvidia’s presence beyond AI model training into telecommunications infrastructure, while Dell continues to benefit from growing enterprise demand for AI-optimized servers as organizations modernize their computing environments.

6G Represents a Long-Term Growth Opportunity

Industry estimates suggest the global market for 6G networking equipment could exceed $50 billion during the first half of the 2030s while expanding at an annual growth rate exceeding 20%.

For Nokia, whose annual revenue totaled approximately $23 billion last year, the transition toward AI-powered networking represents a meaningful long-term growth opportunity.

Unlike Nvidia and Dell, whose AI businesses span numerous industries, Nokia’s future growth is more directly tied to expanding wireless infrastructure and increasing network capacity requirements.

As AI adoption continues to drive higher mobile data usage, telecommunications operators and enterprise customers are expected to invest in more intelligent networking platforms capable of supporting increasingly complex workloads.

Investment Outlook

Although commercialization of 6G remains several years away, Nokia’s early leadership in AI-powered radio access networks positions the company to participate in the next major upgrade cycle for global telecommunications infrastructure.

Nvidia and Dell also stand to benefit through increased demand for AI accelerators and enterprise computing systems that enable AI-RAN deployments. However, the impact is likely to be proportionally greater for Nokia, whose networking business is closely aligned with the long-term expansion of mobile connectivity.

Following a significant pullback from recent highs, some analysts continue to view Nokia as undervalued relative to its long-term AI infrastructure potential, particularly as carriers prepare for the gradual transition from 5G to AI-native 6G networks.

Closing Insights

Artificial intelligence is reshaping not only computing but also the infrastructure that connects billions of devices worldwide. Nokia’s AI-RAN platform demonstrates how the next phase of AI growth will increasingly depend on smarter, more efficient communication networks capable of handling dramatically higher data volumes. While 6G remains a longer-term opportunity, Nokia, alongside partners Nvidia and Dell Technologies, appears well positioned to benefit as telecommunications providers begin building the AI-powered networks that will support the next generation of digital services.
