The foreign exchange market traded cautiously on Thursday as investors balanced geopolitical uncertainty surrounding potential U.S.-Iran negotiations with anticipation ahead of the latest U.S. employment report. While the U.S. dollar recovered modestly from a six-week low, trading activity remained subdued as market participants avoided taking aggressive positions before two major catalysts.

The Japanese yen eased slightly to around 157.85 per dollar after giving back part of the gains generated by recent intervention efforts. Meanwhile, oil prices remained below $80 per barrel, although uncertainty surrounding Middle East developments continued to influence investor sentiment across currency, commodity, and bond markets.

Dollar Finds Stability as Investors Await Political Clarity

The U.S. dollar posted modest gains against major peers after several sessions of weakness, supported by cautious positioning ahead of developments involving a proposed U.S.-Iran agreement. Although no formal breakthrough had been confirmed, expectations that diplomatic progress could reduce geopolitical tensions helped limit demand for traditional safe-haven assets while encouraging measured risk-taking across global financial markets.

Even so, investors remained reluctant to push the dollar significantly higher or lower before receiving clearer signals. Currency traders continue to view geopolitical headlines as an important driver of near-term volatility, particularly because any agreement affecting the Strait of Hormuz could influence global energy prices, inflation expectations, and central bank policy outlooks.

Yen Holds Above Recent Lows Despite Partial Pullback

The Japanese yen weakened modestly after retracing part of the sharp appreciation triggered by recent intervention from Japanese authorities. Earlier this week, the currency strengthened to approximately 155.20 per dollar before settling near 157.85, remaining substantially stronger than the multi-decade low near 164 reached in July.

Market participants continue to assess whether official intervention and increasingly supportive rhetoric from policymakers can produce a more durable recovery for the yen. Expectations that the Bank of Japan could continue normalizing monetary policy have also provided additional support, although sustained gains may depend on narrowing interest rate differentials with the United States.

For Israeli investors and multinational businesses with exposure to global currencies, continued volatility in the dollar-yen exchange rate remains relevant for international trade, hedging strategies, and overseas investment returns.

Payroll Report Could Shape the Federal Reserve’s Next Move

Attention has now shifted toward Friday’s U.S. nonfarm payrolls report, widely regarded as one of the most influential economic indicators for financial markets. The employment data will offer investors fresh insight into the strength of the labor market and could significantly influence expectations for future Federal Reserve policy decisions.

A stronger-than-expected payroll report could reinforce expectations that interest rates remain elevated for longer, potentially supporting the dollar and Treasury yields. Conversely, weaker employment growth could strengthen expectations for a more accommodative monetary stance, placing renewed pressure on the U.S. currency while supporting risk-sensitive assets.

Looking ahead, investors will closely monitor both diplomatic developments involving Iran and the outcome of Friday’s employment report. Together, these events are likely to shape short-term movements across currency markets, bond yields, commodities, and global equity markets, while offering clearer direction for expectations surrounding Federal Reserve policy and broader macroeconomic conditions.
