Key Points

  • Crude oil and Brent crude extended their gains on Friday, with July marking their strongest monthly performance since March as geopolitical tensions intensified.
  • Renewed hostilities involving the United States and Iran, along with disruptions to major shipping routes, continued to raise concerns over global oil supplies.
  • Declining U.S. crude inventories and risks to exports from both the Strait of Hormuz and the Black Sea further supported higher energy prices.

Oil Records Strongest Monthly Rally Since March

Oil prices ended July on a strong note, with U.S. crude closing just below $85 per barrel and Brent crude finishing above $88 per barrel, capping monthly gains exceeding 20%.

The sharp advance represented the strongest monthly increase for crude oil since March, driven primarily by escalating geopolitical tensions across key energy-producing regions and growing fears of supply disruptions.

Friday’s gains of roughly 1% extended a month-long rally that has reshaped market expectations for global energy prices heading into the second half of the year.

Middle East Conflict Keeps Markets on Edge

Investor attention remained focused on the Middle East as renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran continued to elevate risks to global oil flows.

Iran claimed responsibility for attacking two oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz while under U.S. military escort, although Western maritime authorities had not independently confirmed the reported incident.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important energy corridors, carrying approximately one-fifth of global oil shipments. Any disruption to traffic through the waterway has the potential to tighten global supplies and increase price volatility.

At the same time, continued Houthi attacks targeting vessels in the Red Sea and ongoing Saudi military operations against Iran-backed groups have further heightened concerns surrounding regional energy infrastructure.

Supply Risks Extend Beyond the Middle East

In addition to tensions in the Persian Gulf, investors also monitored developments around Russia’s Black Sea export infrastructure.

Recent attacks near facilities serving the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) raised concerns that Kazakhstan’s oil exports—an important supply source for European refiners—could face interruptions.

Although the CPC announced that operations would continue, uncertainty surrounding the security of regional energy infrastructure added another layer of support for crude prices.

U.S. Inventories Add to Bullish Sentiment

Fundamental supply conditions also contributed to the rally.

Declining U.S. crude oil inventories signaled tightening market conditions, reinforcing concerns that global supply may struggle to keep pace with demand if geopolitical disruptions continue.

Lower inventories leave less flexibility within the energy market to absorb unexpected supply shocks, increasing sensitivity to developments in major producing regions.

Market Focus Shifts to Supply Stability

Energy markets are increasingly pricing in geopolitical risk premiums as conflicts threaten multiple transportation routes simultaneously.

With ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea, and Black Sea export corridors, traders continue to monitor whether diplomatic efforts can ease tensions or whether additional disruptions may emerge in the coming weeks.

Outlook

Oil prices delivered their strongest monthly performance in several months as geopolitical instability combined with tightening inventories to support higher crude prices. While supply disruptions have remained limited so far, persistent tensions across several major energy corridors continue to create significant uncertainty for global markets. Investors will closely monitor developments in the Middle East, Black Sea export infrastructure, and inventory data as these factors are likely to remain the primary drivers of oil prices in the near term.
