Key Points
- South Korea delivered a remarkable 17.91% surge, leading a broad rally across all major Asian equity markets.
- Japan jumped more than 4%, while every major regional benchmark finished the session in positive territory.
- The widespread gains reflected a sharp improvement in investor sentiment, with technology-driven markets leading the regional recovery.
Asian markets closed sharply higher on July 31, 2026, capping the month with one of the strongest regional performances of the year. Every major equity benchmark finished in positive territory, led by an extraordinary rally in South Korea and strong gains in Japan. China, India, Australia, and Hong Kong also advanced, signaling broad-based buying across the region.
The synchronized rally marked a dramatic turnaround from the volatility that characterized much of July, with investors aggressively returning to technology and growth-oriented sectors.
South Korea Leads Historic Regional Rally
South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index soared 17.91% to 6,595.45, recording by far the strongest performance among Asia’s major equity benchmarks.
The exceptional rally followed weeks of heavy selling and volatile trading that had pushed the index to multi-month lows. Investors returned aggressively to semiconductor manufacturers, artificial intelligence companies, and technology stocks, fueling one of the largest single-session advances of the year.
Although the KOSPI remains below its highs from earlier in 2026, Friday’s rebound significantly improved market sentiment and restored confidence in Korea’s technology sector.
Japan Posts Strong Recovery
Japan’s Nikkei 225 climbed 4.03% to 64,362.02, recovering strongly after recent weakness.
The advance was driven by renewed buying in export-oriented manufacturers, industrial firms, and technology companies that continue to anchor Japan’s equity market. The rally reflects renewed investor confidence after several weeks of elevated volatility and positions the Nikkei for a stronger start to August.
Japan remained one of the primary contributors to the region-wide advance.
Broad-Based Gains Across Asia
China’s SSE Composite Index gained 0.72% to 3,832.26, extending its recovery despite remaining below the key 4,000 level.
India’s S&P BSE Sensex rose 0.22% to 78,100.92, continuing its steady upward trajectory and reinforcing its reputation as one of Asia’s more resilient markets.
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 edged up 0.10% to 8,976.80, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index also added 0.10% to 25,884.43, maintaining its position comfortably above the 25,000 level.
The fact that every major regional benchmark closed higher underscores the breadth of Friday’s rally.
Currency Markets Strengthen
Currency markets also reflected improving investor confidence.
The Japanese Yen Index climbed 2.44% to 62.69, recording the strongest gain among the reported currency benchmarks.
The Australian Dollar Index rose 0.96% to 70.21, indicating renewed demand for risk-sensitive currencies alongside the broad equity rally.
The simultaneous strength in equities and currencies suggests investors significantly increased exposure to Asian assets.
Outlook
Looking ahead, investors will watch whether South Korea can build on its remarkable rebound and continue recovering toward the 7,000 level. Japan’s ability to sustain momentum above 64,000 will also remain an important indicator of regional market strength.
Attention will also focus on whether mainland China can continue progressing toward the 4,000 threshold, while Hong Kong’s ability to remain above 25,000 and India’s steady advance could provide additional support for regional sentiment.
For now, Asia concludes July on a highly positive note, with broad-based gains led by South Korea and Japan signaling a sharp improvement in investor confidence and setting an optimistic tone heading into August.
