Key Points
- Coinbase reported a wider-than-expected second-quarter loss and missed Wall Street's revenue estimates for the third consecutive quarter, sending shares down more than 7% in after-hours trading.
- Weak cryptocurrency trading activity, softer Bitcoin ETF flows, and a challenging macroeconomic environment weighed on transaction revenue despite continued gains in market share.
- Subscription revenue became a larger share of Coinbase's business, highlighting progress in diversification, although both subscription and transaction revenue fell short of analyst expectations.
Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN) shares fell more than 7% in after-hours trading after the cryptocurrency exchange reported second-quarter results that missed Wall Street expectations, reflecting continued pressure from subdued digital asset trading activity despite ongoing efforts to diversify its revenue base.
The earnings report marked the company’s third consecutive quarter of missing analyst forecasts for both revenue and earnings, underscoring the challenges facing the crypto industry as investors remain cautious amid elevated interest rates and volatile financial markets.
Earnings Miss Expectations
For the quarter ended June 30, Coinbase reported a net loss of $359.5 million, or $1.36 per share, compared with a profit of $1.43 billion, or $5.14 per share, during the same period last year.
Analysts had expected a significantly smaller loss of approximately $0.17 per share.
Revenue declined to $1.2 billion from $1.5 billion a year earlier, falling short of consensus estimates of approximately $1.3 billion.
Management noted that reported earnings continue to be affected by accounting rules requiring the company to revalue its cryptocurrency holdings each quarter, causing significant fluctuations in net income regardless of whether digital assets are sold.
Weak Trading Environment Pressures Revenue
The second quarter unfolded during a relatively stagnant cryptocurrency market, with Bitcoin trading within a narrow range for much of the period.
Although market conditions improved modestly from the previous quarter, sustained outflows from U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds and broader market uncertainty limited retail trading activity.
Higher interest rates and cautious investor sentiment also reduced demand for speculative assets, placing additional pressure on Coinbase’s core trading business.
Subscription Business Provides Stability
Despite weaker trading conditions, Coinbase continued making progress toward building more predictable revenue streams.
Subscription and services revenue reached $555 million, representing a larger share of the company’s overall business than in previous years.
However, the figure still came in below analyst expectations and declined compared with the prior-year period.
Transaction revenue totaled $599 million, also missing market forecasts as trading volumes remained subdued.
Management continues positioning subscription-based products—including custody, staking, and institutional services—as important long-term growth drivers that are less dependent on cryptocurrency price volatility.
Stablecoin Revenue Falls Short
Another area of weakness emerged in Coinbase’s stablecoin business.
Revenue from stablecoin-related activities declined to $292 million, down approximately $17 million from the same quarter last year and below analyst expectations of roughly $327 million.
The decline suggests that even relatively stable segments of the cryptocurrency ecosystem faced slower activity during the quarter.
Market Share Continues to Grow
Despite softer financial results, Chief Executive Officer Brian Armstrong highlighted continued gains in Coinbase’s competitive position.
According to management, the company achieved another record level of cryptocurrency trading market share during the quarter, demonstrating its ability to attract customers even in weaker market conditions.
Armstrong reiterated that Coinbase’s long-term strategy extends beyond cryptocurrency trading into broader financial services powered by blockchain technology, including payments, lending, and digital asset infrastructure.
Outlook
Coinbase continues navigating a difficult operating environment characterized by subdued cryptocurrency trading volumes and cautious investor sentiment. While recent earnings highlight ongoing pressure on transaction-driven revenue, the company’s growing subscription business and expanding financial services platform provide a foundation for more diversified long-term growth. Future performance will likely depend on a recovery in digital asset markets, renewed investor participation, and continued execution of Coinbase’s strategy to broaden revenue beyond traditional cryptocurrency trading.
