Key Points

  • Semiconductor stocks rallied sharply after strong earnings from Microsoft and Lam Research restored investor confidence in artificial intelligence infrastructure spending.
  • Memory chip makers Micron and Sandisk surged after Samsung warned that the global memory shortage could extend through 2028, reinforcing expectations for sustained pricing strength.
  • The rebound followed a sharp sector-wide selloff earlier in the week that erased more than $1 trillion in market value amid concerns that AI capital spending was beginning to slow.

Semiconductor stocks staged a powerful rebound after stronger-than-expected earnings from Microsoft and Lam Research reignited optimism surrounding artificial intelligence infrastructure investment, lifting chipmakers across the sector following a sharp market correction earlier in the week.

The rally came after investors responded positively to robust enterprise AI demand, expanding cloud infrastructure spending, and renewed expectations that the memory chip shortage could persist for several more years.

Lam Research Leads Semiconductor Rally

Lam Research delivered one of the strongest performances in the semiconductor sector, with shares soaring 18%, marking the company’s best single-day gain since 1999.

The company reported stronger-than-expected earnings and issued optimistic guidance, citing continued demand for semiconductor manufacturing equipment used to produce advanced AI processors and memory chips.

Its results reinforced confidence that semiconductor equipment suppliers remain key beneficiaries of the global AI infrastructure expansion.

Microsoft Reinforces AI Investment Outlook

Microsoft shares jumped 15% after reporting strong Azure cloud growth and announcing increased capital expenditures to support expanding artificial intelligence demand.

The company’s willingness to continue investing heavily in AI infrastructure eased recent investor concerns that hyperscale technology companies might begin slowing spending on data centers and AI hardware.

Microsoft’s outlook helped restore confidence across the semiconductor ecosystem, where cloud providers remain among the industry’s largest customers.

Memory Stocks Rally on Supply Constraints

Memory chip manufacturers recorded some of the largest gains of the session.

Micron Technology advanced 18%, while Sandisk surged 26% after Samsung warned that supply constraints in the memory market could continue through 2028.

The outlook suggests that demand for advanced memory products—including high-bandwidth memory (HBM) used in AI accelerators—may continue exceeding available supply for several years.

The comments helped reverse weakness that followed SK Hynix’s recent earnings report, which had disappointed investors despite delivering record profits.

AI Infrastructure Spending Remains Strong

Chip stocks have been among the biggest beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence investment cycle as technology companies continue expanding global data center capacity.

Recent concerns that AI capital expenditures were approaching their peak triggered a broad selloff earlier in the week, wiping out more than $1 trillion in semiconductor market value.

Thursday’s rally indicates investors remain confident that AI infrastructure spending will continue supporting demand across multiple segments of the semiconductor industry.

Broad-Based Gains Across the Sector

The rebound extended well beyond memory manufacturers.

The iShares Semiconductor ETF climbed approximately 8%, reflecting widespread buying across the industry.

Applied Materials gained 15%, Advanced Micro Devices rose 13%, Intel advanced 11%, and Marvell Technology increased 13%.

Nvidia, the dominant supplier of AI accelerators, also moved higher, adding nearly 3% as investor sentiment toward AI-related hardware improved.

Arm Sees Growing AI CPU Demand

Arm Holdings also participated in the rally after reporting strong demand for its first internally developed processor, the AGI CPU.

Management said customer demand has already exceeded $2 billion across fiscal years 2027 and 2028, highlighting increasing interest in processors designed specifically for AI inference and agentic computing workloads.

The announcement demonstrates that opportunities within AI hardware continue expanding beyond graphics processors into broader computing architectures.

Outlook

The sharp rebound across semiconductor stocks suggests investor confidence in the long-term AI investment cycle remains intact despite recent volatility. Strong cloud spending from Microsoft, encouraging equipment demand at Lam Research, and Samsung’s extended memory shortage forecast all reinforce expectations that AI infrastructure investment will continue driving semiconductor demand. While near-term market swings are likely to persist, the sector’s underlying growth outlook remains closely tied to expanding global AI deployment and data center construction.
