Key Points

  • TSMC shares fell more than 4% as a broad selloff in Asian artificial intelligence stocks spread across global semiconductor markets, despite the company's record quarterly earnings.
  • The market decline followed heavy selling in South Korea's technology sector, where leveraged positions were unwound after SK Hynix's earnings failed to exceed elevated investor expectations.
  • Despite the stock weakness, TSMC recently reported 77% profit growth, raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to $60–$64 billion, and forecast annual revenue growth exceeding 40%.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (NYSE: TSM), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, saw its shares fall sharply as a broad selloff across artificial intelligence-related stocks spread through Asian and global semiconductor markets.

TSMC’s U.S.-listed shares declined approximately 4.1%, while its Taipei-listed stock closed 3.5% lower, reflecting growing investor caution toward AI-related equities despite the company’s strong operating performance.

AI Sector Selloff Accelerates

The decline followed heavy selling across South Korea’s equity market, where the KOSPI index plunged as much as 12.6% before recovering to close down approximately 6%.

The two-day market correction erased as much as $2.18 trillion in market value from South Korean equities as investors reduced exposure to highly valued technology and semiconductor stocks.

Market participants attributed much of the volatility to the rapid unwinding of leveraged investment positions following earnings from memory chip manufacturer SK Hynix that, while strong, failed to surpass exceptionally high investor expectations.

Semiconductor Stocks Face Broad Pressure

Selling extended beyond TSMC to other major semiconductor companies across Asia.

United Microelectronics (UMC), another Taiwanese contract chipmaker, declined alongside Japan’s memory producer Kioxia, which fell nearly 14% during the session.

The broad-based weakness suggests investors are reassessing valuations across the semiconductor industry rather than reacting to company-specific fundamentals.

Regulators in South Korea are also reportedly considering tighter restrictions on leveraged single-stock investment products, including higher trading costs and stricter investment limits, potentially adding to investor caution.

Strong Fundamentals Remain Intact

The market weakness contrasts sharply with TSMC’s recent financial performance.

The company recently reported second-quarter net profit of T$706.6 billion (approximately $22 billion), representing 77% year-over-year growth and comfortably exceeding market expectations.

TSMC also increased its planned 2026 capital expenditures to between $60 billion and $64 billion, reflecting continued confidence in long-term semiconductor demand.

Management further projected annual revenue growth exceeding 40%, supported by sustained investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure and advanced chip manufacturing.

AI Spending Under Greater Scrutiny

Despite robust earnings, investors appear increasingly focused on whether the unprecedented wave of AI-related capital spending can continue generating attractive returns.

Technology companies worldwide have committed hundreds of billions of dollars toward AI infrastructure, data centers, and advanced semiconductor purchases.

The recent correction suggests investors are becoming more selective, questioning whether current valuations fully reflect future earnings potential as capital expenditures continue rising across the industry.

Demand Outlook Remains Critical

TSMC occupies a central position within the global semiconductor supply chain, manufacturing advanced chips for many of the world’s largest technology companies.

As AI processors become increasingly sophisticated, demand for TSMC’s leading-edge manufacturing capabilities remains strong.

However, investors will continue monitoring whether customers maintain aggressive spending plans as broader market sentiment becomes more cautious.

Outlook

Although recent market volatility has pressured TSMC’s share price, the company’s underlying business fundamentals remain strong. Record earnings, expanding capital investment, and robust revenue growth projections continue to support its long-term position as the leading manufacturer of advanced AI semiconductors. Going forward, investor attention is likely to focus less on quarterly earnings and more on whether global AI infrastructure spending continues to justify the industry’s elevated valuations amid a more challenging market environment.
